Chapter 4 - The Shadow Network

By 4:00 PM, my house was transformed into a tactical command post.

Marcus had brought in two more former intelligence operators from his team—Sarah, a cyber-forensics specialist, and Knox, a tactical surveillance expert.

Valerie was resting comfortably in my bedroom under the watch of a private pediatric nurse Marcus had arranged. Mateo was sleeping peacefully in his crib, Rex lying across the doorway like an immovable sentinel.

"Here’s the layout," Sarah said, sweeping her fingers across a digital map of the city displayed on the dining table monitor. "Claire and Julian Vance are currently at a private estate in the hills near Lake Ridge. The property is deeded to Vanguard Logistics."

"Are they alone?" I asked.

"Negative," Sarah replied, pulling up a satellite infrared feed. "There are four armed private security guards on the perimeter. High-end contractors. Looks like former mercenary personnel."

"Why would a corporate executive and my wife need armed mercenaries at a private estate?" I asked.

"Because of what’s in the basement," Knox spoke up, sliding a printed manifest across the table. "An hour ago, I intercepted a shipping manifest routed through Vanguard Logistics. They aren't just embezzling money, David. Vance and Claire are using Vanguard to move illegal arms and untraceable bearer bonds out of the country through the local port."

The pieces fell into place with terrifying clarity.

Claire hadn't just fallen out of love; she had systematically converted our marriage into an operational cover. My military background, my reputation for unyielding honesty, and my position as head of security for Vance’s firm made me the perfect fall guy. If the federal authorities closed in, the paper trail led to the 'disgruntled, decorated veteran husband,' while Claire and Vance escaped aboard a private yacht with millions in stolen assets.

And Valerie? Valerie was treated as an inconvenient burden, a servant to be broken so she wouldn't speak, a distraction while Claire managed her double life.

"They think you’re still at work," Marcus said, tapping his pencil against the desk. "They think Valerie is at home cleaning the kitchen, and that you won't suspect a thing until you come home at 7:00 PM."

"They're expecting me to be blind," I said softly, looking at my reflection in the dark monitor. "They think my love for Claire made me weak."

"What’s the call, boss?" Knox asked, his hand resting near his sidearm. "We call the FBI now?"

"If we call the FBI now," I said, "Vance’s legal team will file injunctions, the shell companies will burn their records, and Claire’s lawyers will turn this into a messy custody battle where she claims I’m a unstable combat veteran fabricating stories to ruin her."

I leaned over the table, mapping out the entry points of the Lake Ridge estate.

"We don't call the FBI until we have the physical master hard drives from that estate," I said, my voice dropping into a razor-sharp whisper. "We execute a silent breach tonight. We secure the primary server, extract the unedited surveillance logs, and trap Claire and Vance in their own web."

"And Claire?" Marcus asked quietly. "What happens when you see her?"

"Claire made her choice when she left my daughter bleeding on the kitchen floor," I said, turning away from the map. "Tonight, she learns what happens when you wage war against a father."
