Chapter 7 - The Interrogation Room

By 2:00 AM, the central FBI headquarters in the city was buzzing with activity.

Julian Vance and Claire Ward were seated in separate interrogation rooms on the fourth floor, held under federal charges of conspiracy, wire fraud, illegal arms trafficking, and attempted murder by child endangerment.

I sat in an observation room behind a two-way mirror, holding a warm cup of coffee that had long gone cold. Marcus sat beside me, flipping through the newly filed legal documents.

Inside the interrogation room, Special Agent Hendricks—a formidable woman with twenty years of federal prosecution experience—slammed a thick stack of printed video transcripts onto the metal table in front of Claire.

"Mrs. Ward," Hendricks said, her tone drier than bone. "Your lawyers are currently outside trying to figure out how to handle the fact that we have twelve hundred hours of encrypted security footage recovered from your own shell company's server."

Claire sat with her arms crossed, refusing to look at the agent. "I want my lawyer."

"Your lawyer just saw the life insurance policies you took out on your seven-year-old daughter," Hendricks replied, leaning over the table. "He’s currently downstairs discussing a plea bargain that doesn't involve him being charged as an accessory to fraud."

Claire’s hands began to shake. "David forced me... he was abusive..."

Hendricks turned on a laptop, hitting play on the audio recording retrieved from my home camera system from earlier that morning—the exact recording of Claire telling Valerie that she wouldn't be allowed to eat dinner unless the floor was clean.

The sound of Valerie’s small, weeping voice echoed off the cold walls of the interrogation room: "My back hurts... the doctor said I shouldn't carry heavy things..."

Followed by Claire’s cold response: "Stop being lazy... I am the one managing this family’s future."

Claire flinched as if she had been slapped.

"The state child protection agency has already reviewed this footage," Agent Hendricks said softly. "You have lost all parental rights to Valerie and Mateo, effective thirty minutes ago. You will never see those children again, Claire. Not in this lifetime."

Claire sank back into her metal chair, her eyes staring blankly at the table as the reality of her collapse finally settled in.

I stood up, turning my back on the two-way mirror.

"Where are you going, David?" Marcus asked, standing up with me.

"Home," I said. "Where my children are waiting."
