Chapter 8 - The Healing Begins

Three months later.
The morning sun filtered brightly through the kitchen windows of a new house—a comfortable, rustic home situated on twenty acres of quiet farmland at the edge of the mountains, far away from the city and the memories of Lake Ridge.
The court proceedings had moved with swift, unyielding justice. Julian Vance was sentenced to thirty-five years in federal prison without the possibility of parole. Claire was sentenced to twenty-eight years for her role in the financial conspiracy and severe child abuse.
Every dollar stolen from my firm was recovered and placed into a secure trust fund for Valerie and Mateo’s future education and medical care.
I stood at the kitchen counter, frying pancakes over the stove.
Outside the window, Rex was running across the green lawn, chasing a plastic ball thrown by Valerie.
Valerie was wearing a bright yellow sundress. Her back brace had been removed two weeks ago after her ribs had fully healed under the care of the county’s top pediatric specialists. She was laughing—a real, bubbly, unburdened laugh that echoed through the trees like music.
Mateo sat in a high chair near the kitchen table, babbling happily as he mashed a piece of soft banana between his small fingers.
The back screen door opened, and Valerie ran inside, her cheeks rosy from the cool morning breeze. Rex trotted in behind her, settling down beside Mateo’s high chair like a loyal guard.
"Daddy!" Valerie called out, reaching up to hug my waist.
I immediately set down my spatula and knelt on the floor, opening my arms wide. She flew into my chest, her small arms wrapping tightly around my neck.
"How’s your back feeling today, sweetheart?" I asked gently, kissing her forehead.
"It doesn't hurt at all, Daddy," she whispered, pulling back to give me a bright, gap-toothed smile. "Not even a little bit."
"Good," I smiled back, wiping a smudge of flour from her nose. "Because after breakfast, we have a very important mission."
Valerie’s eyes lit up with excitement. "A mission? What kind of mission?"
"We're going to the local shelter," I said, pointing out the window. "Rex told me he needs a partner to help him guard the farm, and I think you should be the one to choose the puppy."
May you like
Valerie gasped, her hands flying over her mouth in sheer delight. "A puppy?! Really, Daddy?!"
"Really, sweetheart," I said, picking her up and swinging her gently around the kitchen as she squealed with pure joy.
