Chapter 9 - Rebuilding the Light

A year passed.

The horror of that Saturday morning slowly faded into a distant memory, replaced by the warm, healing rhythms of a real family.

Lily’s physical wounds had healed remarkably well. Thanks to a brilliant pediatric plastic surgeon funded through a victim restitution trust created from my parents' seized assets, the scar along her cheek was now nothing more than a faint, soft silver line—a mark of her courage rather than her pain.

My brother David had completely severed ties with our past, using his skills to start a non-profit technology foundation dedicated to supporting children recovering from trauma. His daughter Madison and my Lily became inseparable best friends, spending every weekend playing together in our garden.

With the financial restitution ordered by the court, I didn't buy a mansion or a luxury car.

Instead, I bought a small, sunlit three-bedroom cottage near the ocean, with a wide front porch, a big backyard with a tire swing, and room for a dozen book shelves. I kept my job at the public library, finding deep joy in reading stories to neighborhood children every afternoon.

One bright Saturday afternoon, we held a joint birthday party for Lily and Madison in our backyard.

There were pink and gold balloons bobbing in the warm sea breeze, vanilla cake with rainbow sprinkles, and the sound of children’s laughter echoing across the lawn.

David stood near the grill, flipping burgers with a bright smile, while Karen helped the girls make flower crowns from fresh daisies.
