Chapter 6 - The Unraveling of the Millers

The testimony of a six-year-old victim recorded directly from her hospital bed sent shockwaves through the legal defense team.

When Prosecutor Marcus Cole played Lily’s clear, innocent voice in front of the grand jury during the indictment hearing, the jury returned a unanimous indictment on all charges within fifteen minutes: Attempted Murder, First-Degree Child Abuse, and Felony Conspiracy.

Faced with impending prison time, my father tried to use his wealth to silence the community.

He attempted to transfer millions of dollars out of Miller & Vance Financial into offshore accounts in the Cayman Islands to prepare for a sudden flight from the country. But my brother David, who served as the firm’s lead IT director, caught the illegal wire transfers in real-time.

David didn't hesitate. He immediately flagged the transactions and reported his own father to the FBI and the Securities and Exchange Commission.

Two days later, federal agents swarmed the offices of Miller & Vance Financial.

My father was arrested right in his corner office, led out in handcuffs in front of all his colleagues and junior partners. His assets were frozen, his firm collapsed overnight as clients withdrew their funds, and his reputation in the financial world was utterly incinerated.

That evening, David came to my apartment carrying a large box of my old childhood photographs—the ones my parents had hidden away in their attic for years.

"I'm so sorry, Emily," David wept, sitting at my kitchen table, placing his head in his hands. "I was so blind for so long. I let them treat you like garbage because I was comfortable being the favorite child. I let them make Lily feel worthless."

I walked over and put my arms around my brother, feeling his shoulders shake.

"You’re here now, David," I whispered. "That's what matters."
