Chapter 3 - The Crime Scene Truths

While I sat beside Lily’s bed in the Pediatric Intensive Care Unit, holding her small, warm hand while the monitors beeped rhythmically, Detective Jenkins was tearing my parents' spotless mansion apart.

At 4:00 PM that afternoon, a team of forensic technicians dusted the upstairs guest room for fingerprints and analyzed the blood patterns on the antique lace pillow.

My parents sat in their grand living room under the supervision of two police officers. My brother David and his wife Karen were sitting on the couch, pale and visibly shaken, while their seven-year-old daughter Madison played quietly in another room, oblivious to the storm.

"This is harassment!" Robert Miller roared as Detective Jenkins walked downstairs holding a evidence bag. "I am calling my legal team!"

"Call whoever you want, Mr. Miller," Detective Jenkins said calmly, placing the sealed plastic bag onto the marble coffee table.

Inside the bag was a heavy, silver-plated antique hand mirror that usually sat on the guest room vanity. The silver edge was stained with faint traces of dried blood and small threads of yellow fabric from Lily's dress.

"Forensics found your wife's fingerprints all over the handle of this mirror," Jenkins stated, her voice icy and precise. "They also found fine blood splatter on the sleeve of your wife's pale sweater, Mrs. Miller."

Patricia Miller gasped, involuntarily pulling her hands behind her back. "That... that’s absurd! I went upstairs to check on the linen! I touched the mirror by accident!"

"And what about the audio recording?" Jenkins added smoothly.

David leaned forward, his voice trembling. "What... what audio recording?"

Detective Jenkins looked directly at my brother. "One of the guests at your daughter’s party was recording a video on her phone near the kitchen when the incident happened. The camera caught the exact moment your mother and father clinked their glasses. The audio is crystal clear."

Jenkins pulled out her department tablet and hit play.

The familiar, arrogant voice of my father echoed through the silent living room: “Finally she’ll match her worth.”

Followed by the sharp clink of champagne flutes, my mother’s cold laughter, and her terrifying declaration: “What fun would that be? I wanted the whole family to know that only my real grandchild matters.”

David stared at his parents in absolute horror. He stood up slowly, stepping away from them as if they were monsters.

"You... you hit a sleeping six-year-old girl with a silver mirror?" David whispered, his eyes wide with horror. "You hurt Lily just to ruin her face for pictures?!"

"David, don't be ridiculous!" Patricia cried out, reaching for him. "We did it for Madison! We did it so your daughter would be the center of attention!"

"Get away from me!" David shouted, tears brimming in his eyes. "You are sick! Both of you!"

"Robert Miller, Patricia Miller," Detective Jenkins declared loudly, pulling two pairs of handcuffs from her belt. "You are under arrest for first-degree felony child abuse, aggravated assault, and conspiracy to commit severe bodily harm. You have the right to remain silent..."
