Chapter 4 - The Courtroom Battle Begins

Three days later, the news of the "Miller Family Scandal" exploded across the city.
Headlines ran on every local news station: Prominent Financial Executive and Wife Arrested for Horrific Assault on Six-Year-Old Granddaughter.
Robert and Patricia Miller used their vast wealth to post a staggering $1 million bail each, hiring the most expensive, ruthless defense attorney in the state—a man named Victor Vance, known for getting wealthy criminals off on technicalities.
I stood outside the county courthouse holding a cup of cold coffee as my legal advocate, a sharp and fearless attorney named Fiona Vance (who happened to be Victor Vance's estranged, highly principled cousin), walked up to meet me.
"Emily, they're going to fight dirty," Fiona warned me as we walked past the sea of flashing news cameras. "Victor is already preparing a defense claiming Patricia suffers from sudden onset dementia and that Robert had no physical involvement in the assault."
"I don't care what lies they tell, Fiona," I said, my voice steady, forged in the fire of the nightmare I had lived through. "They hit my sleeping daughter. They laughed about it. I will not rest until they are behind bars."
Inside the courtroom, the contrast was striking.
On one side sat my parents, dressed in tailored dark suits, surrounded by a team of five high-priced lawyers, looking arrogant and untouchable.
On my side sat Fiona and me. But behind us, sitting quietly in the gallery, was my brother David and his wife Karen.
When my parents turned around and saw David sitting on my side of the courtroom, my mother’s face twisted in fury.
"David!" Patricia hissed from the defense table. "What are you doing sitting with her?"
David looked his mother dead in the eye, his voice loud enough for the entire courtroom to hear. "I am sitting with my sister and my niece. You aren't my parents anymore."

The judge entered, banging her gavel sharply. "Order in the court! We are here for the preliminary bail modification and indictment hearing in the matter of the State v. Robert and Patricia Miller."
Prosecutor Marcus Cole stepped up to the podium, his expression grim. "Your Honor, the State moves for immediate revocation of bail. The victims—a single mother and her traumatized six-year-old child—are in danger as long as these defendants remain free."
