Chapter 5 - Lily’s Awakening

While the legal war escalated in court, my world centered entirely around Room 412 at St. Jude Children’s Hospital.

Lily had finally been brought out of her induced coma. When her soft brown eyes slowly fluttered open, my heart stopped beating for a second.

"M-Mommy?" she whispered, her voice tiny and raspy behind her bandages.

"I’m right here, baby," I sobbed, gently holding her small, uninjured left hand, kissing her knuckles over and over. "Mommy is right here. You're safe."

Lily’s hand reached up slowly, her tiny fingers touching the heavy white bandages covering her right cheek and jaw. A small tear leaked from her swollen eye.

"Mommy..." she whimpered, "did I do something bad?"

My heart shattered into a million pieces. "No, sweetie! No, you didn't do anything wrong! Why would you say that?"

"Grandma came into the room while I was sleeping," Lily whispered, her voice trembling with innocent confusion. "I opened my eyes... and she was standing over me with the silver mirror. She looked so mad at me, Mommy. She said... she said I was an ugly little library girl who didn't belong in her house... and then she hit me."

The room went deathly silent.

Detective Jenkins, who was standing quietly near the door to monitor Lily's recovery, stepped forward with a voice recorder.

"Lily, sweetie," Jenkins said softly, kneeling beside the bed so she was at eye level with my daughter. "Did Grandma Patricia hit you with the mirror?"

Lily nodded slowly, squeezing my hand tight. "Yes. And Grandpa was standing at the door. He told her to hit me again so I wouldn't be in the birthday pictures."

I buried my face in the hospital mattress, my body shaking with pure, unadulterated rage. It was no longer just an assumption or forensic evidence.

Lily remembered everything.
