Chapter 7 - The Master Stroke

By the end of the second month, Julian’s forensic team had completed their full audit of Vance Dynamics.
The findings were devastating for Daniel.
Not only had he embezzled corporate funds to support Rachel, but he had also systematically falsified tax returns for three consecutive years to hide profits from the IRS and his original board investors.
On a rainy Tuesday afternoon, we gathered in Judge Harrison’s courtroom for the final divorce and asset division hearing.
Daniel sat at the defense table beside a overworked, low-cost legal aid attorney—his high-priced corporate defense lawyers having withdrew two weeks prior when his retainer check bounced.
He looked terrible. He had lost twenty pounds, his suit hung loosely off his shoulders, and his hands trembled continuously.
I sat at the petitioner’s table beside Julian Vance, looking immaculate, calm, and completely focused.
Judge Harrison reviewed the final settlement decree, tapping his glasses against the wooden bench.
"Mr. Vance," Judge Harrison spoke, his deep voice carrying absolute authority throughout the room. "The court has reviewed the independent forensic report. The evidence of intentional marital asset dissipation, corporate fraud, and tax evasion is overwhelming."
Daniel lowered his head, unable to look up.
"Under state marital property laws," Judge Harrison continued, "this court orders the immediate transfer of 100% of Mr. Vance’s equity in Vance Dynamics—amounting to 85% of total company shares—to Mrs. Sarah Vance as restitution for stolen inheritance and dissipated marital assets."
Daniel gasped, looking up in shock. "Your Honor! That's my company! I built it!"
"You built it on your wife's money and a foundation of systemic fraud, Mr. Vance," Judge Harrison snapped. "Furthermore, Mrs. Vance is awarded sole legal and physical custody of minor children Noah Vance and Lily Vance. Mr. Vance is granted supervised visitation for two hours every second Saturday, contingent upon complete compliance with court-ordered psychological evaluations and child support payments."
" child support?" Daniel choked out. "I don't have a job! I don't have any money!"
"Then I suggest you find employment quickly, sir," Judge Harrison said coldly. "Because failure to pay will result in an immediate bench warrant for your arrest."
CRACK.
The gavel struck the block.
"Court is adjourned."
Julian turned to me, a broad smile spreading across his face as he extended his hand. "Congratulations, Mrs. Vance. You are now the majority owner and Chief Executive Officer of Vance Dynamics."
I took his hand, looking across the room at Daniel, who was sitting frozen in his chair, staring at the empty space where his empire used to be.

I felt no urge to gloat. I felt no need to whisper insults.
Justice had been served, cold, precise, and absolute.
