Chapter 4 - The Boardroom Trap

Over the next two weeks, I played the role of the quiet, obedient, self-sacrificing wife to absolute perfection.

I packed Daniel’s lunches. I smiled when he took late-night calls from Rachel in the hallway. I even allowed Rachel to drop Eli off at our house for a two-hour "playdate" with Noah on a Sunday afternoon.

Rachel had arrived at my front door wearing designer sunglasses and an insufferable smirk, clearly expecting me to slam the door in her face or break down. Instead, I invited her in, offered her herbal tea, and complimented her handbag.

Her smirk had vanished within ten minutes, replaced by deep confusion. She couldn't understand why the woman she had come to replace was acting like a gracious hostess.

What Rachel didn't know was that while she was sitting in my living room, Julian’s team was running a high-grade metadata tracker on the phone she had connected to my guest Wi-Fi network. Within twenty minutes, we had mirrored her text logs with Daniel, uncovering two years of messages detailing how they planned to bleed Vance Dynamics dry before filing for my divorce.

On Thursday morning, the day arrived.

Global Tech Solutions had invited the board of Vance Dynamics to their downtown headquarters for the formal execution of the preliminary acquisition agreement.

Daniel left the house at seven in the morning, wearing his finest charcoal Brioni suit, custom silk tie, and a gold watch he had bought himself using company funds.

"Wish me luck, Sarah," he had said at the door, preening in the hall mirror. "Today changes our lives forever."

"Good luck, Daniel," I said, looking him dead in the eye with a warm smile. "You’re going to get exactly what you deserve."

At ten o'clock, inside the glass-walled executive boardroom on the fiftieth floor of the Global Tech tower, Daniel sat at the head of a mahogany table.

Beside him was his primary corporate investor, Marcus Vance, and three representatives from Global Tech. Across the table sat Global Tech’s Chief Legal Officer, Eleanor Vance.

"Gentlemen," Eleanor said, opening a thick leather binder. "We have reviewed the preliminary valuations for Vance Dynamics. We are prepared to offer $52 million for a 100% equity buy-out, with $30 million allocated directly to Mr. Daniel Vance as founder and principal equity holder."

Daniel’s heart pounded against his ribs. He felt a rush of pure, unadulterated triumph. He was thirty-five years old, and he was about to become a multi-millionaire. He was already imagining the look on his friends' faces, the luxury yacht he would buy in Miami, and the life he would live with Rachel.

"That valuation is acceptable to us, Eleanor," Daniel said, picking up the heavy Montblanc pen resting beside the document. "I am ready to sign."

Before the tip of his pen could touch the paper, the heavy double doors of the boardroom swung open.

Two uniformed court marshals stepped into the room, followed by Julian Vance and me.

I was wearing a sharp, dark emerald silk suit, my hair styled in a sleek chignon, carrying a slim leather folder. I looked nothing like the exhausted woman standing in the hospital lobby two weeks ago.

Daniel froze, the pen hovering an inch above the signature line.

"What is the meaning of this?" Daniel snapped, his voice tight with sudden panic as he stood up. "Sarah? What are you doing here?"

Julian Vance stepped forward, sliding a stack of court documents across the polished table directly into the hands of Global Tech’s Chief Legal Officer.

"My name is Julian Vance," he announced in a voice that commanded absolute silence in the room. "I represent Mrs. Sarah Vance. We are here to serve an emergency court order issued one hour ago by Supreme Court Judge Harrison."

"This is a private corporate closing!" Daniel shouted, his face turning bright red. "Security, escort these people out!"

"Touch my client or her legal team, Mr. Vance, and you will be arrested on the spot for felony obstruction," Julian warned calmly.

Eleanor, Global Tech’s legal officer, was rapidly reading through the documents Julian had handed her. Her eyes grew wider with every page.

"Mr. Vance," Eleanor said, her voice dropping into an icy tone as she looked up at Daniel. "Is it true that 40% of the founding equity of Vance Dynamics was acquired using funds from your wife's personal inheritance, under an un-diluted 2019 marital property agreement?"

Daniel swallowed hard, his skin turning gray. "That... that was restructured during the Series A funding!"

"It was fraudulently restructured through forged signatures," Julian corrected smoothly, opening his own briefcase and pulling out a forensic handwriting analysis report. "Furthermore, we have filed a formal freeze on all corporate transactions due to evidence of systemic corporate embezzlement. Over $1.2 million in company capital has been funneled to an offshore shell company—R&E Holdings—to purchase personal real estate for Mr. Vance's mistress."

The Global Tech executives immediately closed their binders and pulled their hands away from the contracts as if they had been scorched by fire.

"This buy-out is suspended indefinitely," Eleanor declared, standing up and sliding her chair back. "Global Tech does not acquire companies involved in active felony fraud and marital asset dissipation litigation."

"No! Wait!" Daniel begged, reaching across the table. "Eleanor, please! It’s a domestic dispute! We can resolve this!"

I walked slowly up to the table, standing right across from him.

"It’s not a domestic dispute, Daniel," I said, my voice completely calm, echoing through the high-ceilinged room. "It's an audit."
