Chapter 2 - The Audit Begins

At eight o'clock the following morning, while Daniel was presumably at his mistress’s apartment or his company headquarters, a non-descript gray van pulled into my driveway.
Julian Vance stepped out, wearing a sharply tailored charcoal suit and carrying a leather briefcase. Behind him were two young associates holding encrypted external drives and specialized digital cloning equipment.
I opened the door, wearing a simple cotton dress, my hair pulled back neatly. Lily was asleep in her crib upstairs, and Noah was at preschool with Evelyn, who had offered to drive him out of sheer guilt.
"Sarah," Julian said, taking my hand in a warm, solid grip. "You look remarkably composed for someone who gave birth twenty-four hours ago."
"I don't have time to be tired, Julian," I said, stepping aside to let them into the foyer. "Come into the dining room."
We sat down at the long mahogany table. Julian opened his laptop, pulling up a series of public corporate registries while his associates quietly set up portable scanners.
"Give me the raw facts," Julian said, his eyes sharp behind his silver glasses.
"Daniel founded Vance Dynamics five years ago using $400,000 from my inheritance from my late father," I began, my voice steady and precise. "I held a 40% equity stake in the original company filings. Over the last three years, Daniel told me he had restructured the share holding to secure venture capital, diluting my stake to 5%. He claimed the company was cash-poor, which is why we lived modestly while he took long 'business trips' to New York and Miami."
Julian nodded, taking notes. "And yesterday?"
"Yesterday, he walked into the hospital lobby with a woman named Rachel and a six-year-old boy named Eli who has Daniel’s exact eyes. That means he started an affair—and had a child—the exact same year he founded the company with my inheritance."
Julian let out a low whistle. "He used your capital to fund a secret family."
"Not just a secret family," I said, leaning forward. "Daniel is arrogant, but he isn't stupid. He brought Rachel into the open yesterday because he believes Vance Dynamics is about to finalize its major buyout with Global Tech Solutions next month. The rumored valuation is $50 million. He thinks if he forces me into a hasty divorce now, while the company is still technically valued low on paper, he can pay me a tiny settlement, lock me into a standard child support agreement, and walk away with tens of millions to share with Rachel."
Julian’s face lit up with the predatory grin of a master litigator.
"He thinks he caught you at your weakest point post-childbirth," Julian said. "He played his hand too early."
"Exactly," I agreed. "Which is why I haven't said a word to him. He thinks I'm cowering in bed crying. I need your team to clone his home office desktop, mirror the shared cloud servers, and pull every financial transaction from our joint and corporate accounts for the last six years."
Julian turned to his lead associate. "Get to work on the home office."
For three hours, Julian’s team operated like surgical specialists. They cloned Daniel’s hard drives, downloaded backup ledgers, and extracted digital tax records.
By eleven in the morning, Julian pulled up a hidden shell company registry registered in the Cayman Islands under the name R&E Holding Limited.
"Look at this, Sarah," Julian pointed to the screen. "R&E—Rachel and Eli. Over the last eighteen months, Daniel has funnelled over $1.2 million in 'consulting fees' from Vance Dynamics directly into this shell account. He bought a $900,000 beachfront condo in Miami under R&E Holdings three months ago."
I stared at the screen. While I had been skipping ultrasound appointments because Daniel claimed we needed to save money for his company’s legal fees, he had bought a luxury condo for his mistress.
"Is it embezzlement?" I asked quietly.
May you like
"It’s corporate fraud, marital asset dissipation, and tax evasion," Julian replied, his voice dripping with icy satisfaction. "If we file an emergency injunction today, we freeze his personal accounts. But if we wait until he signs the preliminary term sheet with Global Tech next week, we can trap him in a legal net that will forfeit his entire equity stake directly to you."
"We wait," I said without a second of hesitation. "Let him think he's about to become a millionaire. Let him build his dream house on sand."
