Chapter 5 - The Frozen Kingdom

Within twenty-four hours of the disaster in the Global Tech boardroom, Daniel’s world fell into complete, chaotic darkness.
Judge Harrison signed a comprehensive emergency injunction freezing all of Daniel’s personal bank accounts, his corporate expense cards, the R&E Holdings offshore account in the Caymans, and the deed to the Miami condominium.
Daniel was legally locked out of Vance Dynamics pending an independent forensic audit by the State Department of Financial Regulation.
On Friday night, I sat in the living room of our house, drinking tea, when the front door banged open.
Daniel stumbled into the hallway. He had taken off his jacket, his tie was crooked, and he looked completely unhinged.
"Are you insane?!" he screamed, rushing into the living room, slamming his fists onto the dining table. "You ruined the deal! Global Tech pulled out completely! The investors are threatening to sue me for breach of fiduciary duty! I am facing corporate fraud charges!"
I took a slow sip of my tea, looking up at him without a single trace of fear.
"You ruined the deal yourself, Daniel," I replied calmly. "When you embezzled $1.2 million of company money to buy Rachel a condo while telling me we were too poor to afford a second car."
"I built that company!" he yelled, his veins standing out on his neck. "You were just sitting at home playing mom!"
"I built that company with my father's money," I corrected, standing up slowly, stepping into his personal space until he was forced to look directly into my eyes. "And I ran the forensic audit that just caught you. You spent five years treating me like an idiot because I chose to stay home with our son. You mistook my kindness for weakness, Daniel. That was your fatal error."
His phone began buzzing frantically on the table between us.
The caller ID displayed Rachel.
Daniel stared at the phone, then at me.
"Answer it," I said pleasantly. "She’s probably calling to ask why her credit card was declined at the grocery store twenty minutes ago."
Daniel snatched up the phone and put it on speaker, his hand trembling.
"Daniel!" Rachel’s frantic voice shrieked through the speaker. "What is going on?! My card just got rejected at the salon! The landlord of my apartment says the rent check for next month bounced! And the bank says the Miami condo is under a legal lien!"
"Rachel, listen to me—" Daniel tried to speak.
"Are you broke?!" she screamed over the phone. "Did that pathetic wife of yours take the money?! You promised me we were going to be rich after the buy-out! You told me she was too stupid to do anything!"
Daniel’s face flushed with deep, agonizing humiliation as he looked at me.
"Rachel, I’ll call you back—"
"Don't bother calling me back if the cards aren't working!" she yelled, slamming down the phone.
The room fell dead silent.
I smiled softly, picking up my mug.

"She really loves you for who you are, Daniel," I said softly. "It must be wonderful to build a life on such genuine affection."
Daniel sank into a chair, covering his face with his hands, weeping tears of pure, desperate self-pity.
