Chapter 8 - Stripped Bare

Thirty days after the dramatic fall at the charity gala, the reality of Blake Winslow's new existence was complete.

In a small, windowless consultation room inside the county civil courthouse, Blake sat across from his court-appointed defense attorney. Gone were the tailored Italian suits, the handmade leather shoes, and the silver watch. He wore a simple, faded blue jumpsuit, his hair unkempt, his face covered in dark stubble.

"The bankruptcy judge signed the final liquidation order this morning," his attorney said, shuffling through a stack of court filings. "All personal and corporate assets linked to you, your mother, and your sister have been seized to satisfy the ninety-four million dollars in civil judgments awarded to Fairchild Capital."

"What about my mother’s house?" Blake asked, his voice weak and completely broken. "She... she had a small townhome in West Palm Beach..."

"Foreclosed," the attorney replied bluntly. "It was purchased using a secondary mortgage underwritten by Winslow Development. Lenette and Corinne have been evicted. Last I heard, they are living in a rented one-bedroom apartment near the highway, working hourly jobs at a local retail chain to pay off their personal debts."

Blake buried his face in his rough, manicured hands, letting out a ragged choke of despair. "And Sloane?"

"Miss Whitaker accepted a plea agreement yesterday," the attorney said. "She agreed to testify against you regarding the falsified financial statements for Harbor Pointe in exchange for a reduced sentence. She’s looking at three years in a federal facility. You, however... given the scale of the bank fraud and embezzlement... are facing fifteen to twenty years."

Blake slowly lifted his head, staring at the blank concrete wall of the room. He thought back to the night of the gala—just one month ago—when he had stood in his kitchen, looking at Arden in her simple clothes while she cleaned up the broken crystal bowl. He remembered how he had looked down at her, how he had insulted her simplicity, how he had bragged that everything she had existed because of him.

Before you met me, you lived in a small apartment above a bookstore... Everything around you now exists because of me.

His own words echoed in his mind like a cruel, mocking taunt. He had possessed everything a man could ever dream of—a brilliant, wealthy, incredibly loyal wife who owned a financial empire—and he had thrown it all away for cheap vanity, fake luxury, and a woman who betrayed him the second the money vanished.

The door opened, and a sheriff's deputy stepped inside. "Visiting time is over, Winslow. Back to the block."

Blake stood up slowly, his legs trembling as the metal handcuffs clicked around his wrists. As he was led down the dim, sterile hallway toward his cell, he looked out through a small reinforced window at the top of the corridor.

In the distance, shining under the bright Florida sunshine, was the downtown waterfront skyline. The massive crane above the Harbor Pointe development was moving, but the banner hanging from the structure no longer read Winslow Development.
