Chapter 7 - The Boardroom Siege

By two o'clock that afternoon, the emergency shareholder meeting of Winslow Development was convened in the executive boardroom on the top floor of the downtown waterfront tower.
The atmosphere inside the room was thick with tension. The remaining minority investors, board members, and senior department heads sat around the long mahogany table, their faces grim as they reviewed the financial audit reports distributed by Fairchild Capital's legal team.
Blake Winslow sat at the head of the table. He looked hollow, his eyes sunken, his designer suit rumpled, and his hair unwashed. Beside him sat his family attorney, a man who looked equally terrified by the sheer legal firepower lined up against them.
The heavy double doors of the boardroom opened, and Arden entered, accompanied by Evelyn Vance and a legal team of six senior corporate attorneys.
Arden did not wear her emerald jewels today. She wore a tailored black suit with sharp shoulders, her dark hair pulled back into a sleek, flawless knot. The quiet domesticity that Blake had taken for granted for eight years was completely gone, replaced by the lethal authority of an undisputed corporate sovereign.
She walked directly to the head of the table. Blake didn't move.
"That is my chair," Blake said, his voice raspy and shaking. "I am the founder and Chief Executive Officer of Winslow Development."
Arden didn't argue. She simply looked at Evelyn, who stepped forward and placed a heavy document in front of each board member.
"As of twelve o'clock today," Evelyn announced, "Fairchild Capital has officially acquired fifty-eight percent of the outstanding voting stock of Winslow Development through open-market purchases and debt conversions. Under Article 4 of the corporate bylaws, the majority shareholder hereby calls for an immediate vote to remove Blake Winslow as Chairman and Chief Executive Officer."
"You can't do this!" Blake slammed his hands on the table, standing up so fast his chair rolled backward into the glass wall. "I built this company from nothing! My name is on the building!"
"Your name is on the building because my capital paid for the signage," Arden said, taking a seat at the middle of the table, looking at him with absolute coldness. "Board members, please cast your votes."
One by one, the board members—men and women who had laughed at Blake's jokes and eaten at his dinner table for years—raised their hands in favor of Arden's motion. Not a single person voted to support Blake.
"The motion carries unanimously," Evelyn announced. "Blake Winslow is officially terminated from all executive duties, effective immediately."
Blake stood frozen, his eyes darting frantically from face to face around the room. "You traitors! All of you! I gave you your jobs! I gave you your bonuses!"
"You gave them stolen money," Arden said sharply, standing up and leaning over the table. "You falsified accounting ledgers for the Harbor Pointe development. You diverted corporate funds into personal offshore accounts for yourself and Miss Whitaker. And you used company assets to pay for your mother's private spending sprees."
Arden motioned to the legal team. "The forensic audit is complete, Blake. The evidence of your corporate embezzlement has already been delivered to the United States Attorney’s Office."
Blake felt the air leave his lungs. "Embezzlement? Arden... no... please... we were married! You wouldn't put your own husband in prison!"
"You were my husband," Arden said, her voice dropping into a quiet, chilling register. "Until you walked out of my house, left me to clean up your mess, and took your mistress to a gala using my money. You destroyed our marriage, Blake. I am simply cleaning up the legal remains."

Two corporate security officers entered the boardroom, stepping on either side of Blake.
"Please collect your personal items from your desk, Mr. Winslow," Arden commanded quietly. "You have five minutes to leave the premises before you are removed for trespassing."
