Chapter 4 - The House of Cards Collapses

The air in the VIP lounge seemed to freeze completely. Blake felt as though the floor beneath his handmade shoes had suddenly dissolved into an abyss.
"Default?" Blake whispered, his voice cracking. "That’s... that’s impossible. The grace period for the preliminary debt restructuring doesn't expire until the end of the month!"
Evelyn Vance stepped beside Arden, holding a leather folder containing a stack of legal documents. "Under Section 14-B of your credit agreement with Gulfside Holdings—a wholly owned entity of Fairchild Capital—any unapproved change in executive leadership, transfer of corporate assets, or material misrepresentation of corporate solvency triggers an immediate acceleration clause," Evelyn explained in a calm, clinical tone. "When you transferred fifteen percent of Winslow Development’s treasury shares to Miss Whitaker’s personal LLC yesterday morning without board approval, you triggered the default."
Blake whirled around to look at Sloane, his eyes filled with wild betrayal. "You said your legal team verified that transfer! You said it was standard compensation for the PR strategy!"
Sloane’s face turned bright red as surrounding reporters and camera crews began pointing their lenses toward the commotion. "I... I didn't know! Blake, you said you had full control of the board!"
"I do have control of the board!" Blake yelled, losing his composure completely.
"You had control," Arden corrected him, her voice ringing out clearly enough for the nearby city council members to hear. "Until three hours ago, when Fairchild Capital exercised its option to purchase the forty percent equity stake previously held by your former senior partner, Arthur Pendelton. I am now the majority shareholder of Winslow Development, Blake."
Lenette rushed into the circle, grabbing Arden’s arm with manic desperation. "Arden! Arden, my dear child! Please! We are family! This is just a misunderstanding! You know how much Blake loves you! He’s just been under so much stress with the business... this girl, this Sloane, she seduced him! She led him astray!"
"Lenette," Arden said, pulling her arm away from the older woman's grasp with absolute disgust. "Two hours ago, you told me I lacked elegance and belonged in the kitchen. You brushed past me and broke my mother's heirloom crystal bowl without a single word of apology."
"It was an accident!" Lenette cried out, tears ruining her heavy makeup. "I'll clean it! I'll buy you a hundred crystal bowls!"
"You cannot buy back eight years of disrespect," Arden said softly.
Corinne stood in the background, her face pale as she realized her social media stream was still live, broadcasting her family's public humiliation to tens of thousands of local followers. Comments were flooding in at a terrifying speed, mocking the Winslow family for treating an heiress like a servant.
Blake stepped toward Arden, lowering his head, his hands trembling as he reached out in a desperate plea. "Arden... please. We can fix this. Let’s leave this party right now. We can go home—to our home—and talk about this like husband and wife. I’ll fire Sloane tonight. I’ll banish her from the company! Just don't destroy everything I built!"
Arden looked at the man she had loved for nearly a decade. She saw no strength in him now—only the pathetic panic of a bully who had finally run out of power.
"You didn't build anything, Blake," Arden said coldly. "You borrowed my wealth, lived in my mansion, and took credit for my silence. And now, the bill is due."
She turned on her heel, her liquid silk gown swishing gracefully as she walked away toward the main ballroom doors, flanked by her executive team.

"Security," Evelyn Vance ordered softly into her lapel microphone. "Escort Mr. Winslow, his family, and Miss Whitaker out of the venue immediately. They are no longer guests of Fairchild Capital."
As the heavy brass doors closed behind Arden, the sound of Blake screaming her name echoed uselessly against the marble walls of the grand ballroom.
