Chapter 3 - The Confrontation at the Gala

The revelation hit the ballroom like a physical shockwave. A collective murmur flared through the crowd, followed by polite, thunderous applause from the city's elite.
Blake’s champagne glass finally slipped from his fingers, crashing onto the marble floor—a chaotic echo of the crystal bowl Lenette had broken in the kitchen just two hours earlier. Nobody looked at Blake. All eyes were fixed on Arden as she took the microphone.
"Good evening," Arden said, her clear, melodious voice filling the hall. "Welcome to the tenth annual Coastal Vision Benefit. Tonight, we celebrate sustainable progress, community investment, and the protection of our natural heritage. Fairchild Capital was built on a simple promise: that true wealth must serve a purpose higher than personal greed."
Blake’s legs felt like lead as he took a step forward, his chest heaving under his midnight-blue tuxedo. "No... no, this is impossible," he muttered under his breath, his face pale and sweating. "She lied to me. She’s been playing me!"
Lenette grabbed Blake’s arm, her fingers digging through his tailored jacket. Her voice trembled with a mixture of terror and fury. "Blake! Did you hear what that woman said? Fairchild Capital? She owns Fairchild Capital? The entire harbor project... our loans... our mortgages..."
"Shut up, Mother!" Blake hissed, shaking her off. He shoved his way through the crowd of dignitaries, ignoring the curious looks from nearby investors. Sloane hurried after him, her designer heels clicking frantically against the floor, her previous poise entirely shattered.
Arden finished her opening remarks to enthusiastic applause and stepped off the stage, surrounded immediately by a protective ring of security guards and top-tier financial executives.
"Arden!"
Blake’s voice cut through the polite conversations near the VIP lounge. He burst through the circle of onlookers, his neck flushed red, his tie slightly askew.
"Arden, what the hell is the meaning of this masquerade?" Blake demanded, his voice tight with suppressed rage and sheer panic. "What kind of sick game are you playing?"
The security guards immediately moved to block Blake, but Arden raised a single, gloved hand, halting them instantly. She turned to face her husband, her expression entirely cool and detached.
"A masquerade, Blake?" Arden asked softly, her eyes fixing on him with terrifying clarity. "I never lied to you. When we met, I told you my grandfather left me a family business. You laughed and told me not to worry my little head about business because you were going to be the big developer."
"You let me believe you were poor!" Blake snapped, stepping closer, though he flinched slightly under her gaze. "You lived in an apartment above a bookstore! You washed my dishes! You let my mother treat you like a maid for eight years!"
"I lived in that apartment because I valued simplicity and truth," Arden replied smoothly. "And I allowed your family to show me exactly who you were when you believed I had nothing to offer you. Eight years, Blake. For eight years, I cooked your meals, supported your ambitions, and silently approved every major loan your struggling company received through my hidden subsidiaries."
Sloane stepped forward, trying to regain her professional composure, though her voice shook. "Mrs. Winslow—or Ms. Fairchild... whatever you call yourself—this is highly unprofessional. Personal matters should not interfere with corporate partnerships. Winslow Development has a preliminary agreement with Fairchild Capital for the Harbor Pointe project—"
Arden turned her gaze toward Sloane. The look was so icy that Sloane instinctively took a half-step back.
"Miss Whitaker," Arden said quietly. "Your public relations firm receives an annual retainer of two million dollars from a subsidiary of Fairchild Capital. As of five minutes ago, that contract has been terminated for gross ethical violations and incompetence."
Sloane’s jaw dropped. "You... you can't do that!"
"I just did," Arden said. She then turned her attention back to Blake. "And as for Harbor Pointe, Blake... there is no partnership. There never was."

Blake’s heart sank into his stomach. "What are you talking about? I spent eighty million dollars on land acquisition and permits! I pledged Winslow Development's core assets as collateral for the bridge loans!"
"I know," Arden said, taking a step closer to him so only he could hear her next words. "Because my firm holds those bridge loans. And as of midnight tonight, Blake... you are in default."
