Chapter 7 - The Final Gambit

The following evening at 9:00 PM, the storm reached its peak over Long Island Sound.
Inside the Vance Estate, the power flickered once, then died, plunging the vast mansion into darkness as the emergency back-up generators roared to life with a low, mechanical hum.
Julian stood in the central security hub in the basement, surrounded by ten tactical screens.
"Report!" Julian barked into his headset.
"Boss!" Gabriel’s frantic voice cracked over the radio. "Moretti breached the north sea wall! He used two speedboats under cover of the storm! He brought twenty mercenaries!"
Julian’s eyes narrowed into slits of pure steel. "Lock down the upper floors! Move Elena and Lily to the panic room in the master suite now!"
Julian pulled two custom 9mm handguns from the wall safe, racking the slides with brutal, practiced speed.
"Dominic, stay with the security team here," Julian ordered his uncle. "I'm going upstairs."
On the second floor, Elena held Lily tightly against her hip as Gabriel guided them down the dark, wood-paneled corridor toward the master suite.
"Quickly, Miss Elena," Gabriel urged, holding his weapon low. "The panic room is behind the wardrobe—"
BANG! BANG! BANG!
Heavy automatic gunfire shattered the stained-glass windows at the end of the corridor.
Gabriel reacted instantly, spinning around, returning fire down the dark stairwell, dropping two advancing mercenaries before a bullet caught him in the shoulder, throwing him back against the wall.
"Gabriel!" Elena screamed.
From the shattered stairwell stepped Vincent Moretti, holding a silenced submachine gun, his face contorted into a mask of manic, desperate fury. Behind him stood three heavily armed mercenaries.
"Well, well," Moretti sneered, wiping rain and blood from his eyes. "The pretty nurse and the little bastard. Looks like I found my bargaining chip after all."
Elena backed up against the panic room door, shielding Lily completely behind her body, her hazel eyes blazing with ferocious, maternal rage.
"Touch her," Elena growled, her voice dropping into a register that sounded remarkably like Julian’s, "and he will skin you alive."
Moretti laughed—a cruel, high-pitched sound. He raised his weapon, aiming it directly at Elena’s chest.
"He won't get the chance, sweetheart—"
THWIP.
A silent round punched clean through Moretti’s right knee from behind.
Moretti let out a blood-curdling shriek of agony, collapsing onto the Persian rug, dropping his weapon.
Julian Vance stepped out of the shadows at the end of the hall like an ancient god of war.
His face was cold, dark, and utterly devoid of humanity. He didn't rush. He walked slowly down the corridor, executing Moretti’s three remaining mercenaries with three rapid, precise shots before they could even turn their weapons.
THWIP. THWIP. THWIP.
The mercenaries collapsed like sacks of cement.
Julian walked up to the screaming, bleeding Vincent Moretti, raised his polished leather boot, and slammed it down onto Moretti’s chest, pinning the rival mob boss to the floorboards.
Julian raised his pistol, pressing the red-hot barrel directly between Moretti’s eyes.
"You touched my house, Vincent," Julian whispered, his voice so quiet it was almost swallowed by the sound of the rain against the roof. "You threatened my wife. And you frightened my child."
"Julian... please..." Moretti wept, blood pouring from his mouth, his hands clawing at Julian’s boot. "We can make a deal... the shipping lines... take them all..."
Julian didn't answer. He looked past Moretti toward Elena, who stood by the panic room door, holding Lily, watching him.
Elena didn't look away. She didn't scream. She met Julian's dark gaze with absolute trust, quietly covering Lily’s eyes with her warm palm.
Julian looked back down at Moretti.

"The deal is closed," Julian growled softly.
