Chapter 4 - The Gilded Cage

The interior of the Vance Estate was a masterclass in ancient, intimidating wealth. High vaulted ceilings, dark oak paneling, Persian rugs, and priceless renaissance oil paintings lined the vast halls.

By 2:00 AM, Lily had been settled into a massive, warm bedroom on the second floor, sleeping soundly beneath a plush down duvet, guarded by two senior female housekeepers whom Julian personally vetted.

Downstairs in the grand library, a fire crackled in the massive stone hearth.

Elena stood near the French doors overlooking the ocean, holding a cup of hot tea she hadn't touched. She wore a soft gray wool sweater provided by the house staff, having finally shed her blood-stained scrubs.

The heavy oak doors of the library pushed open.

Julian walked inside. He had removed his suit jacket, his crisp white shirt unbuttoned at the collar, his sleeves rolled up to his forearms, revealing thick, muscular wrists covered in old battle scars.

He walked over to the side table, poured himself two fingers of bourbon, and sat down in the leather armchair near the fire.

"Dominic is resting in the west wing clinic," Julian reported smoothly. "My private surgical team is monitoring his heart. He will recover."

Elena turned around, her hazel eyes cold. "Great. Your uncle is safe. Now when do you send us home?"

Julian set his glass down, looking at her over the flames. "You don't have a home to go back to, Elena. Your apartment in Queens was searched by Moretti’s men two hours ago."

Elena gasped, setting her tea cup down so hard the saucer rattled. "What?!"

"They found your address through the hospital records," Julian explained flatly. "They tore the place apart looking for anything tied to me. If you had been there... you and Lily would be dead right now."

Elena sank into the armchair across from him, her face turning pale as paper, her hands shaking violently as the reality of her situation crashed over her.

"My whole life..." Elena whispered, her voice cracking. "My job... my apartment... my routine... ruined in one morning."

Julian watched her intently. He stood up, walked slowly across the Persian rug, and knelt on one knee in front of her chair—a movement so unnatural for a man of his stature that Elena froze.

He reached out, taking her cold, trembling hands into his massive, warm palms.

"I am sorry, Elena," Julian said. His voice was soft, devoid of the harsh authority he used with his men. "I did not seek you out to destroy your life. But my enemies know who you are now. They know Lily carries my blood."

He looked directly into her eyes, his icy gray gaze burning with absolute conviction.

"In my world, weakness is executed. But my family is protected with every drop of blood I possess. You stay here. You live here. My wealth, my men, my power... they are yours now."

"I don't want your wealth, Julian!" Elena cried, tears finally spilling over her lashes. "I wanted a quiet life! I wanted to raise my daughter to be good, to be safe, away from guns and blood!"

"You can still raise her to be good," Julian whispered, his thumb gently wiping a tear from her cheek. "I will make sure she never sees the blood. But to keep her safe... you have to let me be her shield."

Elena looked down at his large, calloused hand holding hers. She felt the terrifying, magnetic pull of the man—the same dangerous, irresistible pull she had felt seven years ago in a dark Chicago basement.

Before she could answer, Gabriel knocked sharply on the library door, stepping inside with a dark, grim expression.

"Boss," Gabriel said quickly. "Vincent Moretti just called a council meeting of the Five Families for tomorrow afternoon. He’s claiming you broke the treaty by executing four of his lieutenants at the hospital."

May you like

Julian slowly stood up, the warmth vanishing from his face instantly, replaced by the terrifying mask of the Syndicate Don.

"Let him call the council," Julian growled softly, adjusting his cuffs. "Tell the bosses I will attend in person. And tell Vincent Moretti... he should have stayed in the shadows."
