Chapter 6 - The Rose in the Citadel

Back at the Vance Estate, three days passed in a tense, surreal atmosphere of gilded protection.
Elena spent her mornings in the estate’s vast glass conservatory, watching Lily play among the tropical plants. Lily was thriving. To the six-year-old, the massive fortress was a magical castle filled with friendly guards who gave her chocolates, endless rooms to explore, and a private tutor who taught her art and music.
Julian returned to the estate every evening at 7:00 PM.
Despite commanding a multi-million-dollar syndicate war across five boroughs, the moment he stepped through the front doors, the ruthless crime lord vanished.
He would take off his holster, set his phone on the foyer table, and spend an hour sitting on the floor of the living room, building massive Lego castles with Lily.
Elena watched them from the doorway.
She watched the way Julian’s massive, scarred hands handled the plastic blocks with delicate care. She watched the way his harsh, intimidating face lit up whenever Lily let out her high-pitched, joyful laugh. She watched the way Lily looked up at him—not with fear, but with absolute, unshakeable trust.
"He loves her, you know," a voice spoke from behind her.
Elena turned. Dominic Vance stood in the hallway, leaning on a dark mahogany cane. He was dressed in a silk robe, his color fully returned, his dark eyes warm and wise.
"Mr. Vance," Elena said quickly, stepping forward to offer him her arm. "You shouldn't be walking without your nurse—"
"I have two legs and a strong cane, Nurse Marsh," Dominic chuckled softly, accepting her arm anyway. "And please... call me Uncle Dominic. Everyone else does."
They stood together near the archway, watching Julian lay beside Lily on the rug, letting the little girl place a plastic tiara on his silver-tipped hair.
"In thirty-eight years, I have never seen Julian smile like that," Dominic murmured softly, his voice full of deep emotion. "When his father was murdered fifteen years ago, Julian closed his heart in a vault of iron. He became a weapon for this family. He fought, he bled, he took back our territory... but he stopped being human."
Dominic turned his head, looking at Elena with profound gratitude.
"You saved his life in Chicago seven years ago, Elena," Dominic whispered. "And by bringing that little girl into his world... you saved his soul."
Elena looked back at Julian.
Her heart swelled with a complex, powerful mixture of emotions that she could no longer deny. She had spent six years fearing the ghost of the dangerous mobster from Chicago. But living under his roof, seeing his absolute devotion to their daughter, and feeling his quiet, fiercely protective tenderness toward her every evening... her defenses were crumbling.
That night at midnight, Elena couldn't sleep.
She walked down to the kitchen to fetch a glass of warm water. As she passed the library, she saw a soft light glowing beneath the double doors.
She pushed the door open softly.
Julian sat at his mahogany desk, staring at a map of the Brooklyn docks, holding an unlit cigar between his fingers. He looked exhausted, deep lines carved around his eyes, his dark hair disheveled.
"You should be sleeping," Elena said gently, stepping into the room.
Julian looked up, his icy gray eyes softening instantly as he saw her in her soft cotton robe.
"Moretti’s shipping lines were seized by federal agents two hours ago," Julian said softly, setting his cigar down. "The war is ending, Elena. Within forty-eight hours... Moretti will be finished."
Elena walked over to his desk, stopping beside his leather chair.
"And then what?" Elena asked quietly. "What happens to us, Julian?"
Julian looked up at her. He reached out, his long fingers gently wrapping around her wrist, pulling her closer until she was standing between his knees.
"What do you want to happen, Elena?" Julian whispered, his voice thick with raw emotion. "Do you want me to buy you a house in London? In Switzerland? Give you ten million dollars and let you live in peace?"
Elena looked into his eyes—the terrifying, magnificent eyes of the man who had claimed her heart seven years ago and never let it go.
"I don't want London, Julian," Elena whispered, her fingers reaching out to gently touch his scarred jaw. "I don't want Switzerland. I want my daughter to have her father. And I want... I want the man who protected us."
Julian let out a ragged breath. He stood up, wrapping his long arms around her waist, pulling her flush against his chest, and buried his face in the soft crook of her neck.

"I will give you everything, Elena," Julian vowed, his chest heaving against hers. "My life. My name. My heart. Forever."
He lifted her chin, and for the first time in seven long years, his lips met hers in a deep, passionate, possessive kiss that wiped away years of fear, regret, and loneliness.
