Chapter 4 - The Damage Control

Panicked and humiliated, Mark sped back to the city, his mind racing not with concern for my survival, but with anxiety over his public reputation and his partnership at his venture capital firm. He arrived at St. Jude Hospital late Sunday evening, adjusting his designer coat and putting on a practiced look of deep, distraught husbandly concern for any potential cameras or onlookers.
He marched toward the ICU nurses' station, demanding entry to my room and asserting his legal authority as my husband. But before he could step past the double doors, two armed hospital security officers blocked his path. Standing beside them was Julian Vance, holding a stack of legal documents.
Julian calmly handed Mark a copy of the temporary restraining order, a temporary custody suspension, and an emergency locks-change notice for our residence. Mark exploded, shouting that I was mentally unstable, dramatic, and weaponizing a minor medical complication to ruin his life. Julian merely smiled coldly, pointing to the ceiling security cameras. "Every word you speak is being recorded, Mr. Vance. Step off hospital grounds immediately, or you will spend the rest of your birthday weekend in a county jail cell."
