Chapter 2 - The Cold Awakening

I woke up to the rhythmic, rhythmic beep of a heart monitor and the sterile stench of antiseptic. Oxygen tubed into my nose, and IV lines crisscrossed both of my arms. Standing at the foot of the bed was Clara, her face drawn and shadowed with exhaustion, holding a sleeping Leo against her chest.
When my eyes met hers, the full weight of what had happened crashed over me. I hadn't just almost died; I had been left to bleed out by the man who vowed to love and protect me. The grief was swift, but beneath it burned something cold, sharp, and entirely new: absolute clarity. The weak, accommodating woman who tolerated Mark’s emotional abuse was gone, bled out on that nursery floor.
Clara moved closer, gently placing Leo in the crook of my arm. Seeing his warm, breathing chest rise and fall anchored me to the earth. Clara informed me that the hospital social worker had already been involved due to the extreme circumstances of my admission. With Clara’s help, I signed an immediate temporary guardianship order for Leo, shielding him legally from Mark. I also hired Julian Vance—no relation to Mark, but one of the most ruthless family law attorneys in the state—who arrived at my hospital room within two hours to take my statement, take photographs of my injuries, and file an emergency restraining order.
