Chapter 3 - The Uninvited Guest

Four hundred miles away at the Timberline Alpine Lodge, Mark was on his third bottle of vintage champagne. Surrounded by his wealthy, sycophantic friends, he was soaking in the adoration of his birthday weekend, utterly indifferent to the world he had left behind. His phone, tucked away in his coat pocket on Do Not Disturb, lit up silently with dozens of missed calls from unknown numbers, hospital administration, and finally, local law enforcement.
It wasn't until two uniformed sheriff's deputies walked into the private VIP lounge of the resort that the music cut out. Mark chuckled, assuming his friends had hired performers for a birthday prank. He held up his glass, making a arrogant remark about the law coming to crash his party.
The senior deputy did not smile. In front of twenty horrified guests, he read out an emergency order of protection and served Mark with a subpoena. When the officer plainly stated that his wife was in critical condition in the intensive care unit following severe physical neglect and that an active criminal investigation regarding domestic endangerment had been launched, the color drained from Mark’s face. The smug, invincible facade crumbled instantly as his friends stared at him in utter disgust.
