Chapter 6 - The Unspoken Vow

In the weeks following Marcus Vance’s arrest, the dynamic within the Russo estate shifted dramatically.

With the legal threats eliminated and full custody of the twins officially transferred to Serena, a new warmth bloomed within the massive mansion. The estate felt less like a fortified syndicate stronghold and more like a real, living home.

Dominic began taking his dinners upstairs with Serena and the girls instead of eating alone in his study. He taught Rose how to play chess on his vintage marble set, and allowed Lily to draw bright, colorful pictures on his executive desk pads. The syndicate boss who had spent fifteen years building an intimidating empire found himself rushing home from business meetings just to read bedtime stories to two little girls who called him "Uncle Dom."

Yet, between Dominic and Serena, an unspoken tension grew—a delicate, lingering electricity that neither knew how to navigate.

One late evening, after the girls were sound asleep, Serena walked out onto the second-floor balcony overlooking the illuminated gardens. The winter air was crisp, but the sky was remarkably clear, filled with thousands of twinkling stars.

She heard quiet footfalls behind her. Dominic stepped onto the balcony, holding two warm mugs of spiced apple cider. He handed one to her, leaning his elbows against the stone balustrade beside her.

"You look peaceful tonight," he remarked softly.

"I was just thinking," Serena said, taking a sip of the warm cider, "about how different my life is now. Three months ago, I was sleeping on a piece of cardboard behind a bakery, praying that my daughters wouldn't freeze to death. And now..."

She turned her head to look at his sharp, handsome profile illuminated by the moon.

"And now you have given us everything," she continued gently. "You bought the girls new wardrobes, you established trust funds for their college education, you gave us safety... Dominic, you've done more than enough. I've been looking at small apartments near the university district. I can get a job at a local gallery—"

Dominic set his mug down on the stone ledge with a sharp, heavy clack. He turned around, his eyes flashing with a sudden, dark intensity that made Serena stop mid-sentence.

"An apartment?" Dominic asked, his voice low and tight. "You're leaving?"

Serena blinked, startled by his reaction. "Dominic... we can't stay here forever. You have your life, your business... We are taking up your home, your time—"

"Do you really think this was just charity?" Dominic interrupted, taking a fast step toward her, closing the distance between them until she was backed against the stone railing. "Do you truly believe I brought you here, fought off the Moretti family, and restructured my entire life just to hand you an apartment key and watch you walk away again?"

Serena’s heart hammered wildly against her ribs. "Dominic..."

"I have loved you since I was sixteen years old, Serena," Dominic confessed, his voice trembling with a raw, desperate passion he had kept buried for over a decade. "When you threw those flowers away in high school, I didn't stop loving you. I worked until I built an empire so no man could ever look down on me again, but no woman ever touched my heart because none of them were you."

He reached out, his hand gently cupping her jaw, his thumb tracing the soft curve of her cheek.

"I don't want you to leave, Serena," he whispered, his eyes searching hers with absolute vulnerability. "I want you to stay here. As my wife. As the queen of this house. I want to spend the rest of my life protecting you and raising those girls as my own."

Serena stared at him, tears welling in her amber eyes—not tears of sadness, but of pure, overflowing joy. The cold walls she had built around her heart shattered completely.

"I don't want to leave either, Dominic," she whispered back, leaning up on her tiptoes. "I love you. I think I've loved you since the moment you put your coat over my freezing baby."

Dominic let out a long, shuddering breath, leaned down, and captured her lips in a deep, passionate kiss that sealed twelve years of waiting under the star-filled Chicago sky.
