Chapter 1 - The Sanctuary of Silver and Stone

The grand mahogany doors of the Russo estate swung open, releasing a wave of dry, cedar-scented warmth that made Serena’s frostbitten skin sting sharply.
Dominic did not wait for the servants to offer assistance. He carried little Rose directly into the sprawling foyer, his heavy tread echoing against white marble floors imported from Carrara. Serena followed three paces behind, her worn shoes leaving dirty slush marks on the pristine floor, clutching four-year-old Lily against her chest as if expecting armed men to materialize from the shadows.
A tall woman in a crisp gray housekeeper’s uniform stepped forward, her eyes widening slightly at the sight of her master carrying a filthy, shivering child wrapped in his custom cashmere overcoat.
"Mr. Russo," she said, her voice instantly disciplined. "We were expecting your arrival, but—"
"Call Dr. Evans immediately, Mrs. Gable," Dominic interrupted, his voice dropping into a low, iron register that permitted no debate. "Tell him to bring pediatric antibiotics and an oxygen monitor. Then have the master guest suite warmed and prepare a meal—soft broths, fresh bread, and warm milk. Nothing heavy."
"At once, sir," Mrs. Gable replied, curtsying before disappearing swiftly down the grand hallway.
Dominic turned toward Serena. Under the brilliant glow of the crystal chandelier, the full extent of her degradation was horrifyingly visible. Her cheekbones pressed sharply against hollow, bruised skin; her hands were scarred and swollen from the brutal Chicago frost. Yet beneath the grime, her eyes retained that familiar, vivid amber hue—the same eyes that had once looked past him in the high school hallways as if he were made of glass.
"Follow me," Dominic said softly.
He led her up the sweeping spiral staircase to the second floor, stopping before a pair of tall double doors. Inside, the master guest suite was larger than any apartment Serena had ever lived in. A king-sized bed covered in plush ivory velvet sat against a mahogany wall, flanked by a roaring marble fireplace that had already been lit.
Dominic laid Rose down on the center of the bed with extreme care, as though she were made of delicate porcelain. The little girl let out a long, shuddering sigh, her tiny dirt-streaked hand slipping out from Dominic’s coat to grasp the edge of the silk duvet.
"Sit, Serena," Dominic said, gesturing toward a pair of velvet armchairs by the fire.
Serena remained standing near the door, her body rigid with terror. "Why are you doing this, Dominic? If you want to punish me... if you want me to beg for what I did to you twelve years ago, I'll do it. I'll get on my knees right now. Just tell me what you want from us."
Dominic froze. He turned around slowly, his dark eyes fixing on her with an intensity that made her breath catch in her throat.
"You think I dragged a dying child out of a snowdrift to settle a high school grudge?" Dominic asked, his voice chillingly quiet. "Do you truly think so little of me, Serena?"
"I don't know who you are anymore!" Serena cried out, her voice breaking as tears carved clean tracks through the dirt on her cheeks. "You're Dominic Russo! The newspapers call you a monster! They say you control the docks, the politicians, the syndicate! You're a man who destroys his enemies without mercy... and I was cruel to you when you had nothing!"
Dominic took three slow steps toward her. Serena flinched, hugging Lily tighter, but Dominic stopped two feet away. He reached into his suit jacket, pulled out a spotless silk handkerchief, and held it out to her.

"I am a man who remembers where he came from," Dominic said softly. "And whatever sins I have committed in this city, I have never waged war on starving children. Wash your face, Serena. The doctor will be here in five minutes."
Before she could answer, the door chimed, and a silver-haired man carrying a heavy leather medical bag rushed into the room, followed by Mrs. Gable bearing trays of steaming food.
