Chapter 5 - The Confrontation

Marcus Vance lay in the mud, staring up through the iron gate at Dominic Russo.
The heavy gate rolled open with a low, hydraulic groan.
Dominic stepped through, followed by Marcus and two security guards. Dominic looked down at the man who had tormented Serena for years—a cowardly, broken parasite hiding behind high-end suits and stolen authority.
"Please... Dominic, wait!" Vance begged, backing away on his elbows, his expensive trousers ruined by the red clay. "She’s my wife! We can make a deal! You want her? Take her! Just give me half a million to clear my debts, and I'll sign the divorce papers! I'll give you full custody of the girls!"
Dominic felt an icy rage surge through his veins—a rage so intense that for a brief second, his hand drifted toward the custom sidearm holstered beneath his jacket.
Before Dominic could move, a clear, sharp voice rang out from the mansion porch.
"He won't give you a single cent, Marcus."
Dominic turned. Serena was walking down the stone driveway through the rain. She was wearing a tailored black wool coat Dominic had bought her, her head held high, her amber eyes burning with an unshakeable, fierce strength.
Dominic reached out an arm to shield her, but Serena stepped beside him, looking down at her ex-husband in the mud.
"Serena!" Vance gasped, trying to put on his old manipulative smile. "Honey, tell him! Tell him we can work this out! I was wrong, I was sick... I'll go to rehab! Just tell Russo to give me a chance!"
"I spent four years believing I was nothing because of you," Serena said, her voice completely steady, echoing with a quiet power that surprised even Dominic. "I let you beat me, I let you starve me, because I thought I was protecting my children. But you were never a man, Marcus. You were just a parasite feeding on my fear."
She pulled a thick legal envelope from her coat pocket—documents prepared by Dominic’s elite legal team—and threw them onto his muddy chest.
"Full surrender of parental rights," Serena declared coldly. "Full criminal confession regarding the human trafficking conspiracy, signed by your own hand, or Dominic hands that audio recording to the Federal Bureau of Investigation in thirty minutes. You will spend the next thirty years in a federal penitentiary, Marcus."
Vance looked at the documents, then at Dominic’s dark, merciless eyes, and finally at the squad of armed men surrounding him. He realized, with absolute clarity, that he had reached the end of his road.
Trembling, crying tears of pathetic self-pity, Marcus Vance grabbed a pen from his coat pocket and signed every page against his muddy knee.
"Get him out of my sight," Dominic ordered his guards.
Two men grabbed Vance by his collar, dragging him toward a waiting unmarked van that would transport him directly to the federal court offices downtown.
Serena stood in the pouring rain, watching the van speed away. Her shoulders shuddered once, twice—not with fear, but with the sudden, overwhelming release of four years of unimaginable terror.
Dominic stepped closer, wrapping his heavy coat around her shoulders, pulling her against his chest.

"It's over, Serena," Dominic whispered into her wet hair. "You're free."
Serena turned in his arms, burying her face in his shoulder, holding him tight as the rain washed away the last traces of her dark past.
