Chapter 9 - The Return of Light

Spring arrived in New York, melting the cold ice of winter and bringing green leaves back to the grand oak trees surrounding the DeLuca mansion.

The heavy, somber atmosphere that had hung over the estate for eight months was completely gone. The black draperies were removed from the high windows, replaced by light white linen that let the warm sunlight flood the marble halls.

In the backyard, near the marble fountain, a grand birthday party was taking place.

It was Clara's first official birthday party. Bright balloons floated in the blue sky, classical music played softly from the terrace, and children’s laughter filled the air.

Sophia stood near the catering table, wearing a beautiful floral dress Lorenzo had bought for her, watching Emma run through the grass with a group of children from the neighborhood. She was no longer a maid in the house; Lorenzo had made her the official manager of the estate and a trustee of the family foundation.

Paul stood near the terrace, wearing a light gray suit, keeping a watchful but relaxed eye on the perimeter. For the first time in ten years, his hand wasn't resting on his sidearm.

In the center of the lawn, sitting on a soft woolen blanket under the shade of a large oak tree, sat Lorenzo.

He had abandoned his dark suits for a casual white shirt and trousers. On his lap sat little Clara, who was now walking—or rather, stumbling happily on tiny feet—wearing a yellow dress with a silver swallow embroidered on the collar.

Clara giggled, reaching up to pull on Lorenzo's nose. Lorenzo laughed out loud—a rich, deep sound that echoed across the lawn, making his men smile in genuine happiness.

Emma ran over, holding a bright pink cupcake with a single candle. "Uncle Lorenzo! Look! I brought Clara her cake!"

"Thank you, Emma," Lorenzo said warmly, pulling Emma down to sit beside them on the blanket. "You get the first bite, okay?"

"Okay!" Emma cheered, her eyes shining with joy.

Sophia walked over, setting down a camera. She looked at Lorenzo, her eyes filled with deep respect and affection. "You look happy, Lorenzo."

"I am happy, Sophia," Lorenzo admitted, looking around at his family, his home, and his daughter. "For a long time, I thought my life was defined by what I lost. But now I know it's defined by what I protect."
