Chapter 6 - Whispers in the Wind

With the traitors dealt with and the underworld reordered under Lorenzo's absolute command, peace returned to the DeLuca mansion. But for Lorenzo, the hardest war was just beginning—the war against his own guilt and grief.
Three days after the night at the Falcone estate, Lorenzo sat in his private study. Sunlight streamed through the floor-to-ceiling windows, illuminating dust motes in the air.
On his desk sat a small silver box.
Inside lay Isabella's personal journal, recovered from her old apartment by Paul. Lorenzo had been afraid to read it for eight months, but now, holding Clara in his lap while she chewed on a rubber ring, he slowly opened the leather cover.
The handwriting was familiar, soft, and elegant.
October 14th, Lorenzo thinks he hides his fears from me, but I see them. He fears that his world will swallow our baby whole. But I know the truth. Beneath his cold armor, Lorenzo is the gentlest man I have ever known. If anything ever happens to me, I know he will protect our child with his life. Clara will never be alone.
Lorenzo stared at the page, a profound weight lifting from his chest. All this time, he had blamed himself for Isabella's death, believing his violent lifestyle had drawn the monster to her door. But Isabella had known the risks—and she had believed in him until her final breath.
A soft knock on the door broke his thoughts.
Sophia walked into the study, carrying a tray of warm tea. She looked rested, though a lingering anxiety remained in her eyes. Behind her, little Emma peeked around her mother's skirt.
"Don Lorenzo," Sophia said quietly, setting the tray down. "I... I came to give you my formal resignation. My mother and I will pack our things and leave for Chicago tomorrow."
Lorenzo looked up from the journal. "Resignation? Why?"
Sophia kept her head down. "I kept the truth from you for eight months, Boss. I was afraid of Marco, but... I still lied to you. You cannot trust me in your house."
Lorenzo stood up, carrying Clara in one arm, and walked over to Sophia. He placed his hand gently on Sophia's shoulder.
"You kept my daughter alive, Sophia," Lorenzo said firmly. "When Marco brought you a baby wrapped in blood, you didn't hand her over to the syndicate. You hid her. You fed her. You loved her when I wasn't there to do it."
He looked down at little Emma, who was staring up at him with her wide, brave eyes.
"And your daughter had the courage to step up to the most dangerous man in New York and speak the truth," Lorenzo added, dropping to one knee so he was at Emma's eye level. "You aren't leaving, Sophia. This house is your home for as long as you live. You and Emma are under my protection forever."

Emma smiled, stepping forward and poking Clara's tiny nose. "Is the baby staying now?"
Lorenzo smiled back—a warm, genuine smile that his staff hadn't seen in years. "Yes, Emma. The baby is staying home."
