Chapter 7 - The Unseen Thread

While the immediate threat of Marco and Victor Falcone was eliminated, the reordering of the five families required delicate, firm political work.
Lorenzo called a formal meeting of the New York Commission at a neutral, high-end hotel in Manhattan. The heads of the remaining three major families—the Moretti, Genovese, and Lucchese clans—sat around a heavy mahogany conference table.
"Lorenzo," Don Carmine Moretti, an elder statesman of the mob, spoke up. "You wiped out the Falcone leadership in a single night. You took over their docks and their haulage lines. The Council is concerned you are becoming too powerful."
Lorenzo sat at the head of the table, impeccably dressed, a glass of water before him. He was completely calm, a contrast to the nervous energy in the room.
"I didn't take the Falcone territory for greed, Carmine," Lorenzo explained, his voice smooth and commanding. "I took it because Victor Falcone broke the sacred law. He targeted a mother and a newborn child. If any of you had done the same, I would have done the exact same thing to you."
The bosses shifted uncomfortably in their leather chairs.
"The war is over," Lorenzo declared, leaning forward. "The DeLuca family will honor all existing trade agreements. But let me make one thing absolute clear to every man in this room: my daughter, Clara, is my sole heir. Anyone who speaks her name in a threat, anyone who looks at her with bad intentions, will bring the full force of my empire down upon their head. Am I understood?"
Carmine Moretti looked into Lorenzo's eyes, seeing the absolute, unyielding resolve of a father who had come back from the dead. He raised his glass.
"Understood, Don Lorenzo. To the health of your daughter."
The other bosses raised their glasses in unison. "To Clara DeLuca."
As the meeting wrapped up, Paul leaned down to whisper in Lorenzo's ear. "Boss... we found something else in Marco's private safe. Something about Isabella's crash."

Lorenzo's demeanor instantly shifted. "What is it?"
"It wasn't just Marco and Victor," Paul whispered, his face grave. "There was a third party involved. Someone inside Isabella's own family."
