Chapter 4 - The Lion's Den

Lorenzo didn't panic. The grief that had paralyzed him for eight months was gone, replaced by a crystalline, absolute purpose. He stood up, carefully lifting Clara into his arms, cradling her against his chest inside his suit jacket.

"Elena, Sophia, take Emma and go into the storm cellar beneath the kitchen," Lorenzo ordered smoothly. "Paul, secure the rear exit. Nobody touches this house."

Sophia nodded frantically, grabbing her mother and daughter and slipping through a hidden trapdoor in the floorboards.

Outside, shouting voices echoed through the woods. The remaining mercenaries, hired by Marco's shadow syndicate, surrounded the cabin.

"DeLuca!" a voice shouted through a megaphone. "Give up the child! Marco is already taking control of the family in the city! You're a dead man walking!"

Lorenzo stepped onto the dark porch. The heavy rain washed over him, but he stood tall, holding his daughter tightly against his heart with his left arm while his right hand held his weapon.

"You came to my home," Lorenzo said, his voice carrying clearly through the storm. "You threatened my blood. You have five seconds to drop your weapons."

The mercenary leader laughed. "Shoot him!"

Before the squad could raise their rifles, muzzle flashes erupted from the tree line around the cabin.

A dozen elite DeLuca enforcers, led by Lorenzo's most terrifying lieutenant, a giant of a man known as 'The Butcher' Vane—no relation to Marco—emerged from the dark. Lorenzo had secretly summoned his true loyalists before leaving the mansion.

The battle was brief and merciless. The mercenaries, expecting a grieving, broken target, found themselves caught in an ambush executed by the most dangerous tactical unit in New York. Within three minutes, the forest went quiet again, save for the patter of rain and the groans of defeated men.

The Butcher walked up the porch steps, wiping blood from his blade, and bowed his head deeply. "Don Lorenzo. The perimeter is clear. We caught two alive. They confirmed Marco has fled to the Falcone estate in Long Island."

Lorenzo looked down at Clara, who had slept through the entire firefight, lulled by the rhythm of her father's heartbeat.

"The Falcones think they can harbor a traitor and use my daughter against me," Lorenzo said, his eyes turning to black ice. "Call the five families. Tell them Il Silenzioso is calling an emergency council tonight. At the Falcone estate."

"And Marco, Boss?" Paul asked, coming out from the house.

"Leave Marco to me," Lorenzo replied. "He stole eight months of my daughter's life. I am going to take everything he has left."
