Chapter 2 - The Midnight Drive

Rain lashed against the windshield of the armored SUV as it tore down the dark, winding roads toward the Catskill Mountains.

Lorenzo sat in the rear passenger seat, his eyes fixed on the rain-streaked glass. In the seat beside him sat Sophia, clutching Emma, who had fallen asleep despite the chaos. Up front, Paul drove at dangerous speeds, two additional SUVs packed with armed guards tailing them in tight formation.

"Explain," Lorenzo ordered, his voice cutting through the hum of the engine. "Every detail, Sophia. If you leave out a single breath, I will consider you complicit."

Sophia wiped her nose with a trembling tissue. "I didn't know about the ambush, Don Lorenzo! I swear on my daughter's life! Eight months ago, the night of the crash... Marco brought the baby to my quarters in the back of the estate at 3:00 a.m. She was wrapped in a bloody coat."

Lorenzo’s knuckles turned white as he gripped his armrest. "Isabella's coat."

"Yes," Sophia wept. "Marco told me that Isabella was dead. He said rival men were hunting for the child to butcher her, and that if you found out she was alive, you would take her into the war and get her killed. He threatened to murder Emma if I didn't take the baby and disappear. He paid off the local doctor to register her as my niece."

Lorenzo’s mind raced. Marco hadn't just betrayed him; he had engineered a psychological nightmare. By letting Lorenzo believe his entire family was dead, Marco had driven Lorenzo into a deep, hopeless depression, slowly eroding his grip on the DeLuca syndicate from within.

"Why didn't Marco kill the baby?" Paul asked from the driver's seat, glancing in the rearview mirror.

"Because he needed leverage," Lorenzo answered, his eyes narrowing into slits of pure fury. "If I ever discovered his embezzlement or his secret meetings with the Falcone family, he would have used my daughter as a human shield. He kept her alive as an insurance policy."

He turned to Sophia. "What is her name? What did you name her?"

Sophia swallowed hard. "I couldn't give her a fake name, Boss. In secret... when no one was listening... I called her Clara. After your mother."

Lorenzo closed his eyes. Clara.

A wave of emotion so profound washed over him that he had to grip his knees to stop himself from trembling. For eight months, he had visited two cold marble slabs in Greenwood Cemetery. He had wept in the privacy of his study, staring at an empty crib he couldn't bring himself to dismantle.

His daughter was alive.

"How far?" Lorenzo asked Paul, his voice tight.

"Ten minutes, Boss. The cabin is at the end of a private dirt road."

Suddenly, the radio on Paul's dash crackled to life with static. A panicked voice from the trailing security vehicle spoke through the speaker: "Boss! We’ve got headlights behind us! Three black vans, high speed, no lights! They just rammed Vehicle Two!"

Lorenzo’s eyes snapped open. "Marco's men. He must have had a backup plan in case the memorial went wrong."

"Paul, accelerate," Lorenzo commanded, pulling a custom black heavy pistol from under his coat. "Sophia, get Emma on the floor. Now!"

Behind them, the darkness of the country road was suddenly pierced by blinding high beams. Automatic gunfire erupted, bullets slapping against the armored rear glass of Lorenzo’s vehicle with heavy, metallic thuds.
