Chapter 9 - The Promise under the Blossoms

The sun was setting behind the hills, casting a warm golden and pink light across the cherry blossom trees.
The patients and staff had gone home for the evening, leaving the quiet garden peaceful and still, illuminated by soft amber lanterns hanging from the stone arches.
Nico led Rosalind to the center of the rose garden, near the marble fountain where the water splashed gently in the evening breeze.
Marco and Lucia sat on a nearby wooden bench, holding hands, watching their father with wide, excited eyes. They had been in on the secret for a week, helping Nico choose the perfect setting.
Rosalind looked at Nico, noticing the subtle nervousness in his posture—a sight she had never seen from the formidable man who had once ruled the underworld.
"Nico... what's going on?" Rosalind asked, her heart beginning to beat with a rapid, joyful flutter.
Nico took a slow, deep breath. He took both of her hands in his, looking down into her eyes with an intensity of love that made the breath catch in her throat.
"Nine months ago, Rosalind," Nico spoke, his deep voice rich with emotion, "I sat in my office watching security monitors, waiting for a nanny to betray me. I was a broken man living in a fortress of grief, convinced that the world was only filled with blood, pain, and deceit."
He lifted her hands, pressing his lips gently to her palms.
"And then you walked through my front door," Nico continued, his voice trembling slightly. "You didn't see a terrifying mob boss. You saw a grieving father. You didn't see two hopeless, paralyzed children. You saw two brave superheroes who just needed someone to believe in them."
Rosalind’s eyes filled with hot, happy tears, her lips trembling as she smiled up at him.
Nico slowly dropped to one knee on the soft green grass, holding up the open velvet box. Inside rested an exquisite, custom-designed ring—a flawless, emerald-cut green diamond surrounded by two smaller purple sapphires, representing the colors Marco and Lucia had chosen on her very first day.
"You saved my children, Rosalind," Nico whispered, looking up at her with his entire soul in his gray eyes. "You healed my heart. You gave us a home. Will you do me the absolute honor of becoming my wife, my queen, and the mother of my children?"
From the bench, Marco and Lucia jumped up, cheering and clapping wildly. "SAY YES, ROSE! SAY YES!"
Rosalind let out a joyous, tearful laugh, dropping to her knees in the grass beside him, throwing her arms around his broad neck, pulling him into a deep, passionate kiss.
"Yes! Yes, Nico! A thousand times yes!" Rosalind cried out happily.

Nico slid the stunning ring onto her finger, pulling her into his arms, lifting her off the ground as the cherry blossom petals fell gently around them like pink snow.
Marco and Lucia ran over, throwing their arms around their legs, forming a tight, unbroken family circle under the warm golden lights of the garden.
