Chapter 4 - The Nightmares of the East Wing

Nico and Rosalind moved simultaneously, discarding their standoff as if it had never happened.
They sprinted down the long, carpeted corridor of the east wing, Dante and the enforcers following right on their heels. Nico threw open the door to the twins' bedroom.
Marco was thrashing violently in his bed, his face drenched in sweat, his eyes wide and wild with terror, though he was still trapped in the grip of a horrific night terror. He was gasping for air, his hands clutching his chest as if he were re-experiencing the hot lead tearing through his body. Beside him, Lucia was crying hysterically in her bed, pulling her sheets up to her chin, helpless to reach her brother from her wheelchair.
"Marco! Marco, wake up!" Nico yelled, rushing to his son's side, grabbing the boy's shoulders. But Marco didn't recognize him; the terror was too deep. The boy screamed, flailing his arms, accidentally striking Nico across the jaw.
"Get back, Nico! You're making it worse!" Rosalind commanded, stepping forcefully between the mob boss and his son.
Nico instinctively reached for his weapon, but stopped when he saw what Rosalind did next.
She didn't use force. She sat on the edge of Marco’s mattress, pulling her gun from her waistband and tossing it onto the floor behind her, completely disarming herself in front of a room full of mobsters. She wrapped her arms firmly around the thrashing eight-year-old, pulling his chest flat against hers.
"Marco, listen to my voice!" Rosalind spoke, her tone changing instantly into a rhythmic, powerful, incredibly soothing melody. "You are in your bedroom. You are at the Falcone estate. The bad men are gone. I am Rose, and I have you!"
She began to hum a quiet, unfamiliar melody—an old military lullaby she had used in trauma units overseas—while her thumb gently rubbed the pressure point behind Marco’s left ear.
"Feel my heart, Marco," Rosalind whispered, taking his small, trembling hand and pressing it against her center chest. "Match my breathing. In... two... three... four. Out... two... three... four."
Slowly, agonizingly, the violent convulsions in Marco’s chest began to subside. His rapid, terrified gasps slowed down, matching the steady, calming rise and fall of Rosalind’s chest. The wildness in his dark eyes cleared, replaced by tears of utter exhaustion.
"Rose...?" Marco sobbed softly, burying his face into the neck of her black tactical shirt. "They... they had the guns again... they were shooting at Lucia..."
"I know, baby, I know," Rosalind murmured, kissing his sweaty hair, holding him as tightly as a mother would. "But nobody is hurting you or Lucia tonight. Look at me. I'm right here. Your dad is right here. You're safe."
Across the room, Nico stood frozen. He watched the FBI agent holding his son, comforting him with a tenderness that no money or power in the world could buy. He looked at Dante, whose weapon was now fully lowered, a look of profound respect washing over the old enforcer's scarred face.
Lucia lowered her sheets, sniffling softly. Rosalind reached out her other arm, welcoming the little girl as Nico helped lift Lucia out of her wheelchair and onto the bed beside her brother.
For twenty minutes, Rosalind stayed on that bed, holding both children, whispering stories of bravery, green superheroes, and distant oceans, until both Marco and Lucia fell into a deep, dreamless sleep.
Rosalind carefully pulled her arms free, tucked the blankets around their shoulders, and stood up. She picked up her gun from the floor, holstered it, and turned to face Nico.
Nico gestured toward the hallway. They stepped out into the quiet corridor, closing the door softly behind them.
Nico looked at her for a long, silent moment. The cold mob boss who had executed Victor Cassini an hour ago was completely gone. In his eyes was only the raw gratitude of a father.
"My wife died four years ago, Rosalind," Nico said softly, his voice gravelly with emotion. "When Marco and Lucia were shot three months ago... I died with them. I built these cameras, these walls, these security grids... because I thought I could protect them from the world. But I couldn't protect them from their own minds."
He stepped closer to her, looking down into her eyes.
"You aren't just a nurse, and you aren't just an agent," Nico said. "You're the only person who has kept my family alive."
Rosalind looked back at him, her heart aching with a complex mix of professional duty and undeniable emotion. "Nico... Gardano needs to stand trial. Not just for your empire, but for what he did to those kids."
"Gardano won't see a courtroom, Rosalind," Nico said, his eyes hardening once more into cold steel. "He’s backed by your federal task force Director, Vance. Tomorrow night, Gardano is meeting Director Hayes at an abandoned airstrip in Sussex County to exchange your task force files for protection."
Rosalind’s eyes widened in horror. "Director Hayes? My supervisor?"
"Your task force is corrupt from the top down," Nico revealed, pulling a folded document from his coat and handing it to her. "Hayes isn't trying to bring down the mob. He's taking over Gardano's distribution networks. You were sent here as a distraction, Rosalind. They wanted me focused on you while they finalized their deal."
Rosalind read the document, her hands shaking as she recognized her supervisor's official digital signature on offshore bank transfers from Gardano's front companies. The institution she had dedicated her life to had used her—and was protecting the monster who had paralyzed two innocent children.
She looked up at Nico, her brown eyes blazing with a fierce, dangerous light that mirrored his own.

"What's the plan, Falcone?" Rosalind asked.
A slow, lethal smile spread across Nico’s face. "Tomorrow night... the FBI and the Falcone family are going to work together."
