Chapter 3 - The Trap in the Study

The master study was pitch black, illuminated only by the faint silver moonlight filtering through the floor-to-ceiling French doors overlooking the terrace.

Rosalind moved like a shadow. Gone were the baggy blue scrubs and soft demeanor she wore during the day. She was clad in black tactical pants, a dark long-sleeved shirt, and fingerless gloves.

She knelt before Nico’s massive mahogany desk, a high-tech electronic lock-picker attached to the heavy steel floor safe hidden beneath the rug. The device beeped softly, its digital numbers cycling rapidly through codes.

"Come on... come on..." Rosalind whispered under her breath, monitoring her earpiece. She had set up a perimeter sensor along the driveway, giving her a three-minute warning if Nico’s convoy returned from the docks.

Her mission was clear: locate the backup encrypted drive containing the entire financial network of the Falcone syndicate—the ledger that could dismantle the Tri-State mob forever—and extract herself before her cover was blown.

CLICK.

The heavy safe door swung open three inches.

Rosalind reached inside, her fingers brushing against stacks of bearer bonds, passports, and a velvet box. Deep in the back rested a sleek, black titanium drive stamped with a lion emblem.

"Got you," she breathed, pulling the drive out into the faint moonlight.

CLICK.

The bright overhead chandelier suddenly exploded with blinding light.

Rosalind reacted instantly, rolling to her right, drawing her concealed sidearm, and lining up her sights toward the doorway in less than half a second.

Standing in the frame of the double doors was Nico Falcone.

He was still wearing his blood-stained rain coat, his arms folded loosely across his chest, his face completely devoid of surprise or fear. Behind him, Dante and four armed enforcers stood with weapons raised, covering every exit.

"You move fast for a pediatric nurse, Agent Vance," Nico said quietly, his voice dangerously smooth.

Rosalind didn't lower her weapon. Her hand remained rock-steady, aimed directly between Nico’s eyes. "So you know."

"I knew twelve hours after you walked into my home," Nico replied, taking a calm step into the room, ignoring the gun pointed at his head. "Your cover was immaculate, Rosalind. The Philadelphia hospital, the medical certifications... even the task force credentials. But you made one mistake."

Rosalind’s eyes narrowed. "What mistake?"

"You cared about my children," Nico said, stopping five feet from her. "A real mole sent to destroy me would have searched this office on night one. You spent your first thirty-six hours moving Marco’s ankles and teaching Lucia how to laugh again. A cold government operative doesn't waste time giving hope to two paralyzed kids."

Rosalind swallowed hard, her jaw tightening. "They are innocent children, Nico! They were shot because of YOUR war! They shouldn't be sitting in wheelchairs while you play godfather!"

"Do you think I don't know that?!" Nico roared, his calm facade shattering as raw, agonizing grief burst through his voice. The vein on his temple throbbed wildly. "Every single morning I wake up and look at my children, I die a thousand deaths! I would give every dollar, every territory, every drop of blood in my body if it meant Marco and Lucia could walk through that door right now!"

The room went dead silent. The anger in Nico’s eyes was so raw, so agonizingly genuine, that even the hardened FBI agent felt a sharp pang in her chest.

Rosalind slowly lowered her firearm, though she kept her posture guarded. "If you knew who I was... why didn't you kill me?"

"Because you did something six world-class neurosurgeons couldn't do," Nico said, his voice dropping back into a quiet raspy whisper. "You made Marco’s toes curl tonight. You gave my daughter a reason to smile."

Rosalind looked at the black titanium drive in her hand, then back at Nico.

"That drive in your hand doesn't contain my ledger, Rosalind," Nico revealed softly. "That drive contains the surveillance footage from Gardano's restaurant three months ago. It proves that Anthony Gardano—the man your task force is currently protecting as an informant—was the one who ordered his men to shoot my eight-year-old children in cold blood."

Rosalind froze, her face draining of color. "What? Gardano is a protected witness... the Director said..."

"Your Director lied to you," Nico said coldly. "Gardano offered your superiors a piece of my empire in exchange for immunity. They buried the evidence of what he did to Marco and Lucia so they could use him to bring me down."

Rosalind stared at the drive, her mind racing. She was a dedicated agent, but she had entered law enforcement to protect the innocent, not to shield child-shooters in tailored suits.

Before she could speak, a terrified scream pierced through the quiet mansion from the east wing.

"DADDY! ROSE! HELP!"

It was Lucia.
