Chapter 5 - The Alliance in the Shadows

By 8:00 a.m. the following morning, the east wing of the Falcone mansion had become an unconventional command center.

On the large oak table in the sunroom, medical charts lay side-by-side with tactical maps of the Sussex County Airstrip.

Marco and Lucia sat in their wheelchairs near the floor-to-ceiling windows, working diligently on their journals. Thanks to Rosalind’s physical therapy routine from the previous night, Lucia was able to lift her left knee three inches off her footrest unassisted—a miraculous milestone that had brought quiet tears to Dante’s eyes when he brought in their breakfast tray.

Rosalind stood beside Nico at the head of the table, wearing her navy scrubs once more, though a tactical harness was hidden beneath the cotton fabric.

"Director Hayes will have at least twelve rogue federal agents guarding the perimeter," Rosalind explained, pointing to the aerial layout of Hangar 3. "Gardano will bring his personal security detail—ten men, high-caliber automatic weapons. They think they're completely off the grid."

"They are off the grid," Dante added, leaning over the blueprint. "No local police, no federal monitoring. If a firefight breaks out, nobody is coming to help either side."

"Good," Nico said coldly. "That means nobody will hear them scream."

Rosalind looked at Nico sternly. "Nico, listen to me. We need Hayes and Gardano ALIVE for at least five minutes. I have a satellite feed linked directly to the Department of Justice’s Internal Affairs Division in Washington. If we record Hayes accepting Gardano's bribe and confessing to suppressing the evidence of the diner shooting, Internal Affairs will seize the entire corrupt task force within an hour."

Nico considered this. His instinct was to simply execute both men where they stood. But he looked over at Marco and Lucia playing quietly across the room. If he engaged in a bloody, eternal war with corrupt federal officials, his children would spend the rest of their lives hiding in fortresses, looking over their shoulders.

If they destroyed the corruption legally while eliminating the physical threat, his family could finally step into the light.

"Five minutes," Nico agreed, his gray eyes locking onto Rosalind's. "You get your confession for Washington. After that... Gardano belongs to me."

"Deal," Rosalind said, holding out her hand.

Nico looked at her small, strong hand, then wrapped his heavy fingers around hers. The surge of mutual trust and undeniable heat that passed between them was so palpable that even Dante cleared his throat and looked away.

"You should stay with the twins tonight, Dante," Rosalind suggested softly. "If anything goes wrong at the airstrip, they need someone they trust."

"Nobody touches those kids while I'm breathing, Agent," Dante promised solemnly.

That afternoon, before leaving for the mission, Rosalind knelt beside Marco and Lucia in the playroom. She pulled two small, silver lion-crest pins from her pocket—tokens Nico had given her from his personal vault—and pinned them onto the collars of the twins' shirts.

"These are bravery badges," Rosalind told them gently. "Your dad and I have to go take care of some important business tonight. I need you two to be the strongest superheroes in this house until we get back."

Lucia reached out, wrapping her small arms around Rosalind's neck, hugging her tightly. "Promise you'll come back, Rose? Don't leave like the other nannies."

May you like

Rosalind held the little girl close, her eyes stinging with unexpected tears. She looked up and caught Nico standing in the doorway, watching them with an expression of profound, tender warmth.

"I promise, Lucia," Rosalind whispered, pressing a kiss to her forehead. "I'm not going anywhere. I'm family now."
