Chapter 8 - The Hammer of Justice

The sentencing hearing took place three weeks later. The courtroom was dead silent as Judge Katherine Reynolds adjusted her glasses and looked down at Daniel Carter from the bench.

"Mr. Carter," Judge Reynolds began, her voice echoing with profound authority. "In my twenty-five years on the bench, I have seen crimes driven by desperate poverty, addiction, and sudden rage. But rarely have I encountered a crime of such calculated, ice-cold selfishness as the one you committed against your own flesh and blood."

Daniel opened his mouth to speak, but Judge Reynolds held up a hand, silencing him instantly.

"You took an oath as a healthcare professional to heal," she continued. "You took a vow as a father to protect. You violated both for nothing more than vain, narcissistic lust and greed. You left your innocent, dying daughter in an intensive care unit to wither away while you handed her medicine to your mistress like a trinket."

The judge picked up her pen and signed the official sentencing decree.

"It is the order of this court that you be sentenced to twenty-five years at the State Maximum Security Penitentiary, without the possibility of parole for the first fifteen years. Furthermore, all marital property, retirement accounts, and remaining assets are hereby fully awarded to Emily Carter as civil restitution for damages and ongoing medical support for Lily Carter."

The courtroom erupted into applause. Daniel collapsed into his chair, sobbing hysterically as the bailiffs pulled him up and led him away in heavy chains. As he was dragged through the side door toward the holding cells, he looked back at Emily one last time, weeping, but Emily did not look at him. She was already holding her daughter’s hand, walking out into the sunlight.
