Chapter 1 - The Code Red

Dr. Bennett’s voice echoed like thunder through the silent room, cutting straight through Daniel’s calm, detached demeanor on the speakerphone. "Mr. Carter, your daughter’s organs are beginning to fail. If you have diverted her assigned biologic dosage, you haven't just committed gross misconduct—you have attempted murder."
On the other end of the line, a sudden silence fell. Daniel’s arrogance cracked, replaced by a subtle tremor of panic. "Dr. Bennett? Wait—why are you on her phone? Emily, turn that off!"
"The line remains open," Dr. Bennett said coldly. He immediately motioned to the head nurse. "Activate emergency bypass protocols for pediatric anaphylaxis and autoimmune crisis. Get Chief Medical Officer Vance down here now, and contact Hospital Security alongside the Police Department. Tell them we have an active theft of controlled biological substances resulting in immediate human harm."
Emily fell to her knees beside Lily’s bed, taking her daughter’s cold, trembling hand in both of hers. Lily’s eyelids fluttered, her heart monitor emitting a terrifying, irregular beep that accelerated into a frantic alarm. "Hold on, baby," Emily sobbed, squeezing her small fingers. "Mommy is right here. I’m not leaving you."
"Emily, listen to me!" Daniel screamed through the speaker, all composure lost. "Don't bring the police into this! You’ll ruin my career! Vanessa was desperate! If you ruin my standing at St. Matthew’s, how are we going to pay for this hospital stay anyway? Think for once in your life!"
Emily leaned down close to the speaker, her eyes burning with a fierce, absolute fury she had never felt before in her entire life. "My husband died the moment you traded our daughter’s life for your mistress’s comfort. I am going to tear down everything you built, Daniel. Every single stone."
She ended the call, smashing the power button, and threw the phone onto the bedside table.
Within minutes, the ICU room flooded with medical staff. Dr. Vance, the hospital's Chief Medical Officer, entered alongside two armed hospital security officers and two uniformed police officers. While Dr. Bennett and the pediatric trauma team worked feverishly to administer an emergency alternative immunosuppressant to stabilize Lily’s dropping blood pressure, Dr. Vance turned to Emily, his face pale with horror as he reviewed the requisition logs on his tablet.
"Mrs. Carter," Dr. Vance said, his voice grave. "We just cross-referenced the pharmacy vault logs. Two hours ago, your husband overrode the automated dispensation system using his master administrative key, marking your daughter’s batch as 'spoiled due to temperature malfunction,' and checked out a replacement batch under an unauthorized clinical trial code. He took the drug off hospital grounds himself."
"He gave it to Vanessa Cole," Emily said, her voice shaking with rage as she looked the police officers in the eye. "His assistant. He admitted it on speakerphone right in front of Dr. Bennett."
Officer Miller, the lead officer, took out his notepad and signaled his partner. "We need a full statement, ma'am. And Dr. Vance, we need immediate access to the pharmacy security tapes and the vault access records. This isn't just internal theft—it's aggravated child endangerment and attempted murder."

As the doctors worked frantically over Lily, the heart monitor’s shrill alarm slowly began to rhythmically settle. Dr. Bennett wiped sweat from his brow and turned to Emily with a look of cautious relief. "The alternative agent is taking hold. Her pressure is stabilizing. She’s not out of the woods, but she is fighting."
Emily kissed Lily’s pale forehead, wiping her own tears away. The heartbreak had officially hardened into tungsten. She looked at Officer Miller and said, "Do whatever it takes. Put him in chains."
