Chapter 4 - The Rat in the Trap

Three days later, while Daniel remained stuck in a county jail cell unable to make bail, Vanessa Cole was released on a lowered bond paid by her wealthy parents. Terrified of serving heavy prison time, Vanessa did exactly what selfish people do when the ship begins to sink: she turned on Daniel completely.

Vanessa met with Detective Davis and the Assistant District Attorney, bringing her personal laptop and phone.

"I have text messages," Vanessa said frantically, pushing her phone across the table to the prosecutors. "Look at them! He told me he was getting the drug through an official research grant! I had no idea it was meant for his daughter!"

The prosecutor, Marcus Thorne, scrolled through the messages.

Daniel (11:14 PM): "Don't worry about the cost, Vanessa. I control the inventory. Lily's insurance covers top-tier biologic allocations. I'll just shift her batch over to you and report hers as damaged in transit. No one checks the logs on weekend shifts anyway."

Vanessa (11:16 PM): "Are you sure she'll be okay without it?"

Daniel (11:18 PM): "She's fine. Emily exaggerates everything to get attention. Vanessa, you need this to stay beautiful and healthy for me. Lily will survive a delayed dose."

Prosecutor Thorne looked up, his eyes cold as ice. "Miss Cole, these text messages prove premeditation, health insurance fraud, and direct knowledge that withholding the drug would harm a child."

"I’m giving you everything!" Vanessa cried. "I’ll testify against him! Just please don't send me to prison!"

"Your testimony will be noted in a plea deal," Thorne replied. "But make no mistake—you are going to serve time for receiving stolen property and endangering a child. However, Daniel Carter is going away for a very, very long time."

That evening, the local news broke the story wide open. The headline read: "HOSPITAL EXECUTOR DIVERTS DAUGHTER'S LIFE-SAVING MEDICATION TO MISTRESS: TEXT MESSAGES REVEAL SHOCKING BETRAYAL."

Emily sat in Lily’s room, watching the television muted on the wall. The support from the community had been overwhelming. A crowd-funding campaign started by the hospital staff had already raised over one hundred thousand dollars to cover Lily’s medical bills and future care, ensuring that Emily would never have to rely on Daniel or his insurance ever again.

Lily looked up from her coloring book, her color having returned to her cheeks, looking healthier than she had in months. "Mommy?"

"Yes, my sweet girl?"

"Are we going to be okay?"

Emily leaned over, wrapping her arms tightly around her daughter, feeling the strong, steady beat of Lily’s healthy heart. "We aren't just going to be okay, Lily. We are going to be unstoppable."
