Chapter 6 - The Unraveling of the Affair
With his license revoked and criminal charges mounting, Daniel’s desperation reached a boiling point. From jail, he made repeated attempts to contact his family and former associates to secure funds for his legal defense, but no one answered. His parents, horrified by what he had done to his own daughter, publicly disowned him and offered their full support and family savings to Emily and Lily instead.
Meanwhile, Vanessa Cole’s life was rapidly disintegrating. The hospital had terminated her employment immediately, and her plea agreement required her to forfeit all assets gifted to her by Daniel, including a luxury sports car and expensive jewelry that Daniel had bought her using embezzled hospital funds.
One afternoon, while Emily was walking out of the hospital after Lily’s final discharge checkup, Vanessa was waiting near the parking lot. She looked haggard, dark circles under her eyes, her former glamour completely shattered.
"Emily! Please, wait!" Vanessa called out, rushing forward.
Before Vanessa could get close, two hospital security guards stepped in front of Emily.
"It's okay," Emily told the guards quietly. She stepped forward, looking at Vanessa with cold detachment. "What do you want, Vanessa?"
"I... I just wanted to say I'm sorry," Vanessa sobbed, wringing her hands. "I didn't know he stole it from Lily! He told me he bought it! I swear I didn't want a little girl to suffer!"
"You didn't care where it came from as long as you got what you wanted," Emily said, her voice like steel. "You knew he was married. You knew he had a sick child. You took his gifts, you took his attention, and you turned a blind eye to his lies because it benefited you."
"I'm facing two years in prison, Emily!" Vanessa wept. "My life is ruined! I'll never get a job in this city again!"

"You are facing two years in prison because of your choices," Emily replied calmly. "My daughter almost lost her life because of your greed. You are getting off light. Never approach me or my daughter again."
Emily turned around, got into her car, and drove away, leaving Vanessa sobbing on the pavement. The era of Emily being a passive victim was officially over.
