Chapter 2 - The Audit and the Arrest

By midnight, St. Matthew’s Hospital was under a state of internal lockdown in the administrative wing. The legal team, internal auditors, and detectives from the precinct had taken over the central pharmacy division.

Daniel had turned off his personal phone, but he made a catastrophic mistake: he believed he could slip back into his office late at night to wipe the pharmacy server logs and clear Vanessa’s name before the morning shift arrived.

When Daniel unlocked the double doors of the central pharmacy at 1:30 AM, carrying a duffel bag to retrieve incriminating paperwork, the lights suddenly flashed on. Standing inside were Chief Officer Vance, Detective Davis of the Major Crimes Unit, and four uniformed police officers.

"Daniel Carter," Detective Davis declared, stepping forward with handcuffs drawn. "Step away from the terminal and keep your hands where we can see them."

Daniel froze, his face draining of color. "What is the meaning of this? I’m the Chief Pharmacist here! I have every right to access—"

"You have no rights here anymore, Mr. Carter," Dr. Vance interrupted coldly. "An emergency audit was conducted one hour ago. We reviewed the CCTV footage. You were seen transferring four vials of the biologic agent into a cold bag and hand-delivering them to Vanessa Cole in the executive parking garage at six o'clock this evening."

"She was sick!" Daniel stammered, looking frantically between the officers. "It was an emergency! I was going to log the replacement tomorrow! Emily is making a mountain out of a molehill!"

"Your daughter nearly suffered fatal cardiac arrest due to the lack of that exact medication," Detective Davis snapped, grabbing Daniel’s wrists and snapping the heavy steel cuffs around his wrists. "You are under arrest for grand larceny of controlled pharmaceutical substances, healthcare fraud, and attempted second-degree murder."

As Daniel was led down the main hallway of the hospital in handcuffs, several night-shift nurses and doctors gathered, watching in disgust. Among them stood Vanessa Cole, who had rushed back to the hospital after hearing rumors of an investigation. She was standing near the elevator, clutching her expensive leather handbag, trembling with fear.

"Daniel!" Vanessa gasped as he was paraded past her.

"Vanessa, say nothing!" Daniel yelled, panicking. "Call my lawyer! Tell him Emily set me up!"

Detective Davis paused, looking at Vanessa, then at his partner. "Vanessa Cole?"

"Y-yes?" she stuttered, backing away.

"You are an accessory to the theft of hospital property and felony possession of an illegally obtained prescription drug. Officers, detain her and seize her bag."

Vanessa let out a sharp shriek as an officer seized her purse, pulling out the refrigerated transfer bag containing two unopened vials of Lily’s stolen medication. She burst into tears, immediately pointing her finger at Daniel. "He brought it to me! He told me it was spare stock! I didn't know he took it from his daughter! He lied to me!"

Daniel turned on her, his eyes wide with betrayal. "Vanessa, shut up! What are you doing?!"

"You ruined my life!" Vanessa screamed back as she too was placed in handcuffs.

From the balcony overlooking the lobby, Emily stood beside Dr. Bennett, watching the pair being led away in police cruisers. For the first time in twenty-four hours, Emily felt a spark of clean, cold clarity. The man she had loved for ten years was a monster, and he was finally being dragged into the light.
