Chapter 8 - The Desperate Play

Just as peace seemed to settle over our lives, one final ghost from the past returned to test us.
late January evening, while I was out purchasing groceries, Maren heard a firm knock at her front door. Thinking it was me returning, she opened the door, only to find Evelyn Vance standing on the porch.
Evelyn looked stripped of her usual icy glamour. Her hair was slightly unkempt, her eyes hollowed by stress and the looming public disgrace.
"Maren," Evelyn said, her voice lacking its usual razor-sharp edge, replacing it with desperate urgency. "Please. Let me speak to you."
Maren stood firm, keeping her hand on the door edge, ready to slam it shut. "You are violating a legal restraining order, Evelyn. I should call the police."
"Listen to me, I beg you!" Evelyn pleaded, tears welling in her eyes. "The board is liquidating my personal shares! Arthur is testifying against me! I am losing everything! If you convince Everett to drop the civil charges, I will leave Virginia forever. I will never bother you again!"
Maren stared at the woman who had once treated her like a peasant, who had tried to buy her baby and break her family.
"You still don't understand, do you, Evelyn?" Maren said, her voice remarkably calm and strong. "You think everything is a transaction. You think love and family can be bought, traded, or dropped when the terms no longer suit you."
"I am his mother!" Evelyn cried out.
"And I am Liam's mother," Maren replied with cold certainty. "And unlike you, I will never let vanity or greed come between me and my child. You did this to yourself."
Before Evelyn could reply, my car pulled into the driveway. Seeing me step out, Evelyn panicked, turning around and hurrying toward her sedan, driving off into the darkness, leaving her past behind forever.

I rushed to the porch, checking on Maren. "Are you alright? Did she touch you?"
Maren looked at me and shook her head, a peaceful smile lighting up her face. "I'm completely fine, Everett. For the first time in my life... she has no power over us."
