Chapter 1 - The Secret Behind the Blue Blanket

The newborn felt impossibly light in my arms, his faint, warm breath brushing against my thumb. For a man who managed billions in assets and controlled high-stakes boardrooms, I had never felt more powerless.

"His name is Liam," Maren said, her voice barely above a whisper as she closed the heavy front door, locking out the freezing Alexandria night. "He was born six days ago at Fairfax Hospital."

"Liam..." My voice cracked. I looked down at his tiny, delicate features, the dark tuft of hair, and the distinct shape of his jaw—an exact mirror of my own childhood photographs. Tears stung my eyes, burning with a mixture of profound awe and crushing shame. "Maren... why? Why didn't you tell me? Why keep him a secret?"

Maren walked past me into her living room, where a softly lit Christmas tree cast warm golden hues across the hardwood floor. She sat down on the edge of the sofa, wrapping her arms around her waist as if holding herself together.

"Because your mother told me that if I ever spoke to you again, she would ensure Liam was taken away from me the moment he was born," Maren said, staring straight ahead. "And she had the legal power, the money, and the falsified medical records to do it."

A cold dread pooled in my stomach. "What are you talking about? My mother?"

"When I found out I was pregnant two weeks after you served me with divorce papers, I went straight to your family’s estate in Potomac," Maren explained, her voice trembling with restrained anguish. "I didn't want to text you or call your secretary. I wanted to tell you in person, to see if we could fix what had broken between us. But you weren't there. Your mother was."

Maren looked up at me, eyes glistening with unshed tears. "Evelyn didn't just turn me away, Everett. She sat me down in her study, produced a folder filled with bank statements, and told me that my father’s struggling architecture firm was on the verge of bankruptcy because your family was quietly buying up his debt. She made a simple offer: sign the final divorce decree without contesting anything, move away, and cut off all contact with you—or watch my father lose his life’s work, go to prison for defaulted loans, and face a legal battery that would declare me an unfit mother before I even gave birth."

"No..." I shook my head, stepping closer, holding Liam tighter against my chest. "No, my mother wouldn't... she loved you. She always said—"

"She hated that I wasn't from your social circle, Everett!" Maren cut in, her quiet composure snapping. "She tolerated me while you were climbing the corporate ladder, but once you became CEO, I became an inconvenience. When I refused to leave, she showed me emails—emails from your corporate account—approving the foreclosure on my father's business and authorizing a non-disclosure agreement to keep me away from you."

My blood ran cold. "I never sent those emails."

"I know that now," Maren said quietly, lowering her gaze. "Because three days ago, your mother’s lawyer delivered a final document to my door, asking me to sign away my parental rights in exchange for ten million dollars. That was when I realized the emails weren't yours. They were hers. She was using your corporate credentials behind your back."
