Chapter 3 - Unearthing the Paper Trail

The day after Christmas, I did not return to my executive suite at Vance Global Headquarters. Instead, I called my chief head of security, Marcus, a former military intelligence officer whom I trusted implicitly.
We met in a private conference room at a discreet downtown hotel.
"I need a complete digital and financial audit of my mother’s private office and every transaction made through the Vance Family Trust over the last twelve months," I ordered, staring at the cityscape outside the window. "Specifically, look into the holdings of Maren’s father's firm, Vance Architecture & Design."
Marcus nodded grimly. "Consider it done, Mr. Vance. Is there anything specific you're looking for?"
"Evidence of forgery, unauthorized access to my executive digital signatures, and coercion."
Within forty-eight hours, Marcus delivered a thick leather binder to my temporary residence. The contents were far worse than I had imagined. Evelyn hadn't acted alone. She had colluded with Vance Global’s senior legal counsel, Arthur Pendelton—a long-time family friend who had served my late father.
Pendelton had used corporate slush funds to purchase the distressed debt of Maren's father, deliberate sabotage that drove his firm into near-bankruptcy. They had manipulated supply chain orders and canceled high-profile contracts to force him to his knees, creating the exact leverage Evelyn needed to blackmail Maren into silence.
Furthermore, medical records showed that Evelyn had paid off a clinic Administrator to ensure Maren's prenatal records were routed to her legal team first, ensuring Maren felt completely surrounded and helpless.
Holding the evidence in my hands, a profound rage settled into a cold, calculated resolve. My mother had built a fortress of lies, believing her status made her untouchable. But she had forgotten who trained me to manage corporate warfare.
I called Maren later that afternoon.
"Everett?" her voice sounded tired, accompanied by the gentle cooing of little Liam in the background.
"Maren, I have everything," I said quietly. "The proof that your father's firm was deliberately targeted, the forged signatures, and the financial paper trail linking my mother to the legal harassment. Your father's debt is being completely erased today through a private trust under my personal name, not the company’s."
Silence hung on the line for several moments before I heard a shaky intake of breath.

"Why are you doing this, Everett?" she asked. "Is this just damage control for your reputation?"
"No," I replied with absolute sincerity. "I’m doing this because I spent two years prioritizing money over the only woman I ever loved. I lost you because I was too blind to see what was happening right in front of me. I don't expect you to take me back, Maren. But I will spend the rest of my life proving to you and Liam that I can be the man you deserved from the start."
