Chapter 5 - Ambush in the Boardroom

Monday morning, the glass tower of Vance Global was surrounded by press and corporate executives. The air inside the executive boardroom on the 50th floor was thick with tension.
The fifteen members of the board sat around the massive oval mahogany table. At the head of the table sat my mother, Evelyn Vance, wearing an elegant ivory suit, looking like a queen defending her realm. Next to her was Arthur Pendelton, the corrupt chief counsel.
When I entered the room, all eyes turned to me. I didn't wear a expression of defeat. I walked in with the calm, imposing posture that had built this company into an empire.
"Everett," my mother began smoothly, putting on an act of maternal concern for the board. "Given recent press leaks and the potential compromise of the Kronos merger, the board is considering a vote of no confidence regarding your leadership."
"Is that so?" I said, remaining standing at the foot of the table. "And who provided the press with those false stories, Evelyn?"
"The media receives information from many sources when a CEO’s personal life becomes unmanageable," Arthur Pendelton interjected smoothly. "The board needs stability, Mr. Vance."
"The board needs integrity," I corrected sternly. I gestured toward the door. Marcus pushed open the double glass doors, carrying several bound dossiers, which were quickly distributed to every board member.
"What is the meaning of this childish display?" Evelyn snapped, her eyes narrowing.
"What you have in front of you," I announced clearly, "is a complete forensic audit proving that Evelyn Vance and Arthur Pendelton utilized corporate funds to engage in corporate espionage, extortion, and the falsification of legal documents."
The room erupted into quiet gasps as board members flipped through pages detailing wire transfers, intercepted emails, and illegal surveillance reports targeting Maren and her father’s firm.
"This is absurd! Fabrication!" Pendelton blustered, his face turning pale.
"The federal prosecutors and the Securities and Exchange Commission already have copies of these exact files," I said calmly. "As of 8:00 AM this morning, formal charges were filed against Arthur Pendelton for fraud and embezzlement. And a restraining order has been issued against Evelyn Vance."
Evelyn stood up, her face flushed with fury, dropping her calm facade. "You would destroy your own mother for that girl?!"
May you like
"You destroyed yourself the moment you touched my family," I said, my voice cold as ice. "Board members, you have a choice. Vouch for a criminal conspiracy that will land this company in federal court, or vote right now to strip Evelyn Vance of her board position and sever all corporate ties."
Within ten minutes, the vote was unanimous. Evelyn Vance was ousted from the company her late husband had helped build.
