Chapter 2 - The Matriarch’s Shadow

I stayed at Maren’s townhouse until Liam fell asleep in his bassinet. Every touch, every gentle sway of the baby felt like a miracle I didn't deserve. Maren allowed me to feed him a bottle, watching me silently from the doorway. The contrast between my ruthless public life and my raw, domestic clumsiness was stark.

"I'm going to fix this, Maren," I said as I stood near the doorway, preparing to leave at 2:00 AM. "I don't expect you to forgive me tonight. I don't expect you to trust me. But I swear on my life, no one will ever threaten you or our son again."

"Everett," Maren called out softly before I opened the door. "Your mother isn't playing a game. She believes she is protecting your legacy. Be careful."

I drove straight to my mother’s sprawling estate in Potomac, Maryland. The night sky was pitch black, illuminated only by the faint glow of holiday lights draped over grand stone mansions. My hands gripped the steering wheel so tightly my knuckles turned white.

When I arrived, I let myself in with my master key. The grand foyer was dead silent, the marble floors reflecting the grand chandelier above. I walked up the sweeping staircase and pushed open the doors to my mother’s private study.

Evelyn Vance was sitting by the fireplace, wrapped in a cashmere robe, sipping tea as if expecting me.

"You're home late, Everett," she said smoothly, not even turning her head. "I expected you at the country club dinner hours ago."

"Did you really think you could steal my son from me?" my voice thundered through the grand room, devoid of any corporate restraint.

Evelyn set her teacup down delicately on the saucer. She slowly turned around, her expression unbothered, hardened by decades of high-society maneuvering.

"So, Maren finally played her last card," Evelyn remarked coldly. "I hoped she had more dignity than to drag you into her pathetic sob story on Christmas Eve."

"She didn't drag me anywhere! I went to her!" I shouted, taking furious strides toward her desk. "You forged my digital signature! You threatened her father's livelihood! You tried to buy off the mother of my child and strip her parental rights! Are you insane?!"

Evelyn stood up, her eyes flashing with dangerous authority. "I did what was necessary to preserve this family and your company! That woman was a weight around your neck, Everett! She wanted a simple, domestic life while you were built to rule an empire. A child with her would tie you to mediocrity forever!"

"That child is my son!" I yelled, slamming my fist onto her mahogany desk. "My blood! Your grandson!"

"A distraction!" Evelyn countered without flinching. "A leverage point for a woman who came from nothing! Do you have any idea what kind of press coverage a secret baby and a messy custody battle would bring right before the Vance Global merger next month? I protected you!"

"You protected your own vanity," I said softly, the realization chilling me to the core. "You sacrificed my happiness, my marriage, and my child for a corporate merger."

"You will thank me one day," Evelyn said, stepping closer and reaching for my arm. "I have already arranged a top-tier legal team. We can acquire full custody of the boy quietly. Maren will receive a generous settlement, and you can raise your heir properly without her influence."

I pulled my arm back as if her touch burned. "If you ever go near Maren or Liam again, I will strip you of every title, every board seat, and every dollar you hold in Vance Global. I am the CEO, Mother. And as of tonight, you are dead to me."
