Chapter 8 - The Healing Begins

Three days later—Christmas Eve.

The blizzard had finally passed, leaving Aspen coated in a thick, pristine blanket of powdery white snow. The sky above was a brilliant, crystal-clear blue, illuminated by the bright winter sun.

Inside Caldwell House, the warmth was absolute.

The grand living room looked like a fairytale. A hundred wrapped presents in gold and silver paper sat beneath the giant Christmas tree. The smell of freshly baked gingerbread, roasted turkey, and sweet cinnamon filled every corner of the house.

Emma, Sophie, Grace, and Lily were sitting on the thick wool rug near the fireplace, wearing soft white winter dresses. Their skin was rosy and healthy, their gray eyes bright with pure childhood excitement.

Dr. Harrison had visited an hour earlier, officially declaring all four girls in excellent health. Lily’s wrist was secured in a lightweight pink medical cast, which her sisters had spent the morning decorating with colorful glitter stickers.

I sat on the floor with them, holding a large storybook, reading to them while Mrs. Gable served fresh cinnamon rolls on porcelain plates.

"And then," I read softly, turning the page, "the little wooden train carried all the toys over the mountain, bringing Christmas to every child in the valley."

"Daddy?" Sophie asked, reaching out to touch the soft velvet of my sleeve.

"Yes, Sophie?"

"Are we going to stay here forever now?" she asked quietly, her sisters stopping their play to look at me, waiting for the answer.

I set the book down, gathering all four of them into my arms, feeling their warm, healthy bodies press against mine.

"We are going to stay right here," I promised them, kissing each of their sweet faces. "I handed over the daily management of Caldwell Systems to my executive board yesterday. I'm not traveling anymore. I'm going to be right here, every single morning to make you breakfast, and every single night to read you stories."

Lily smiled brightly, showing her missing front tooth. "And no more moldy bread?"

My heart swelled with a mixture of old pain and profound, healing joy. "No more moldy bread, my sweet Lily. From now on, only pancakes, ice cream, and love."

Emma wrapped her arms around my neck, resting her head against my shoulder. "I knew you were coming back, Daddy. I told Grace and Sophie every night that you were coming home to save us."

I closed my eyes, holding my daughters tight, letting tears of gratitude fall quietly onto my shirt. "I will always come back for you, Emma. Always."
