Chapter 3 - The Diagnosis

The master suite on the top floor of the mansion was roaring with heat from the stone fireplace.
Dr. Harrison worked quickly and gently. He examined each of my daughters while Marcus and I wrapped them in warm fleece blankets and served them small cups of warm broth prepared by my private security detail.
I sat on the edge of the king-sized bed, holding Emma’s tiny hand while Dr. Harrison checked her pulse and lungs with a stethoscope.
"Physically," Dr. Harrison said after forty minutes, stepping over to the corner of the room to speak to me in low tones, "they are suffering from acute early-stage hypothermia and severe mild malnutrition. They haven't had a proper, warm, protein-rich meal in at least three weeks, Richard."
My jaw tightened until my muscles felt like iron bands. "Three weeks..."
"They have low blood sugar, mild dehydration, and vitamin deficiencies," Dr. Harrison continued, handing me a list of medications. "In addition, Lily has a hairline fracture on her left wrist."
I froze. "What did you say?"
"A fracture," Dr. Harrison whispered, his eyes filled with profound anger. "It's about ten days old. It wasn't caused by a fall. It looks like a defensive impact mark—like someone grabbed her arm and twisted it forcefully."
I turned my head slowly to look across the room. Lily was sitting on the edge of the bed, sipping her broth, while Sophie held her small hand.
I walked over, sitting beside Lily, taking her left wrist with extreme gentleness.
"Lily," I said softly, my voice trembling despite my best efforts. "Sweetheart... how did your hand get hurt?"
Lily looked down at her broth, her shoulders rising up to her ears. "I... I reached for a chocolate chip cookie on the counter last week because my tummy was hurting really bad."
"And what happened?"
"Vanessa grabbed my arm," Lily whispered, a single tear falling into her cup. "She said food was expensive and that little girls who steal go to jail. She squeezed my hand until it popped."
I closed my eyes for three long seconds. In those three seconds, every remnant of mercy inside my soul turned to absolute ash.
When I opened my eyes, my voice was completely devoid of emotion. "Marcus."
Marcus stepped forward from the doorway. "Sir."
"Call my chief legal counsel, Arthur Vance, in New York," I ordered. "Tell him to file emergency criminal charges for first-degree child abuse, felony endangerment, grand larceny, and corporate fraud against Vanessa and Julian."
"Arthur is already on standby, sir," Marcus answered.
"Tell him I don't want a settlement," I added, looking at my four daughters who were finally beginning to fall asleep under the heavy blankets, their small bodies warmed by the crackling fire. "I want the maximum penalty under Colorado law. I want every asset Vanessa and Julian own frozen by sunrise. I want their bank accounts seized, their luxury cars repossessed, and their names dragged through every legal registry in the country."
"Understood, Mr. Caldwell."

I leaned over and pulled the thick comforter up to my daughters' chins. Emma reached out in her sleep, clutching my thumb with her small fingers, refusing to let go even in her dreams.
"I'm staying right here," I whispered, sitting on the carpet beside the bed, holding Emma’s hand. "Daddy isn't going anywhere ever again."
