Chapter 6 - The Rat in the Walls

By 6:00 p.m. that evening, the backlash was absolute.
Harold Sterling resigned as Vanessa’s counsel within an hour of the press conference, stating publicly that he had been "grossly misinformed by his clients."
Inside the Caldwell estate, the warm atmosphere had completely returned. The grand living room was decorated with a twenty-foot fresh Fraser fir Christmas tree, brought in by my security team. Thousands of twinkling warm lights, golden ornaments, and wrapped presents filled the space beneath the branches.
Emma, Sophie, Grace, and Lily—dressed in soft, matching velvet Christmas pajamas—were sitting on the thick rug near the roaring fireplace, eating warm gingerbread cookies and drinking hot chocolate prepared by our new head housekeeper, Mrs. Gable, a wonderful woman who had managed my Chicago estate for years.
I sat on the sofa behind them, watching them laugh as Sophie tried to stick a marshmallow on her sister’s nose.
"Daddy, look!" Grace giggled, pointing at the tree. "The angel on top looks like Mommy!"
I smiled, feeling a deep, quiet warmth touch my heart for the first time in months. "It does, Grace. Mommy would love seeing you all so happy."
Marcus walked into the room quietly, leaning down to speak near my ear. "Richard. We have a problem."
I kept my smile fixed so the girls wouldn't notice. "What is it, Marcus?"
"Julian Montgomery just posted bail," Marcus whispered.
I frowned, looking up. "His bail was set at five million dollars cash. The Montgomery accounts were frozen three hours ago. Where did he get five million dollars?"
"That’s the alarming part," Marcus said, handing me a secure satellite phone. "The wire transfer came from a private bank in Zurich, authorized by a firm called 'Vanguard Holdings.' And Vanguard Holdings is owned by your primary corporate rival... Charles Croft."
Charles Croft.
The name sent a chill down my spine. Charles Croft was a ruthless defense contractor who had been trying to launch a hostile takeover of Caldwell Systems for two years. He was the man who had lost a four-billion-dollar government satellite contract to my company three months ago.
"Croft didn't just fund Julian’s bail," I realized, standing up slowly. "Croft was using Vanessa and Julian from the very beginning."
"It gets worse," Marcus added, his voice dropping into a low, grave whisper. "Our cyber-forensic team traced a series of encrypted file transfers sent from your home office server three days ago. Someone used Vanessa’s administrative key card to copy the raw source code for our primary satellite defense platform."
I looked toward the dark hallway leading to my private study.
Vanessa hadn't just been starving my daughters and stealing my money for luxury dresses. She had been acting as a corporate spy for Charles Croft, selling my company's most sensitive technological secrets in exchange for offshore payoffs.
"Where is Julian right now?" I asked Marcus.
"He just left the county jail in an armored SUV," Marcus reported. "He’s heading toward the private airfield in Rifle, Colorado. Croft has a private Gulfstream jet waiting on the tarmac to fly him out of the country."

I looked back at my four daughters, who were happily hanging wooden ornaments on the lower branches of the Christmas tree.
"Marcus," I said, my voice hardening into iron. "Get the chopper ready. We're going to the airfield."
