Chapter 4 - The Counter-Attack

At 7:00 a.m. the following morning, the sun broke over the snow-capped peaks of Aspen, casting a crisp, brilliant golden light across the estate.
The mansion was quiet now. The smell of mold and cold air had been purged, replaced by the scent of fresh pine, burning oak wood, and a hot, nutritious breakfast being prepared in the grand kitchen by a newly arrived team of private medical nurses and elite house staff I had flown in from Chicago on my private jet at 3:00 a.m.
I sat in my library on the ground floor, drinking black coffee, wearing a sharp navy suit.
Arthur Vance, my chief legal counsel—a formidable man in his sixties with sharp silver hair and thirty years of high-stakes corporate litigation experience—sat across from me, reviewing a thick stack of court filings.
"Richard," Arthur said, setting his glasses on the desk. "The Pitkin County District Attorney's Office has officially processed the charges. Vanessa and Julian are currently being held without bail at the county detention facility."
"Good," I said, taking a sip of coffee.
"However," Arthur warned, leaning forward, "Vanessa’s family—the Montgomery faction in Denver—has already hired Harold Sterling."
I raised an eyebrow. Harold Sterling was a high-priced, ruthless defense attorney notorious for using media manipulation and procedural loopholes to clear corrupt socialites.
"What is Sterling's angle?" I asked.
"Sterling released a press statement thirty minutes ago," Arthur revealed, pulling up a video on his tablet. "He is claiming that you, Richard Caldwell, used your immense wealth and corporate influence to set up Vanessa. He is claiming that you abandoned your children for six months, drove Vanessa to a mental breakdown, and fabricated the financial fraud documents to avoid paying her a multi-million dollar divorce settlement."
The tablet showed Harold Sterling standing outside the county courthouse, surrounded by news reporters.
"Mr. Caldwell is a billionaire corporate mogul who neglected his family," Sterling declared into the microphones. "My client, Vanessa, was left alone in a massive estate, struggling with severe post-nuptial depression while trying to manage four troubled children. The allegations of abuse are completely fabricated by Mr. Caldwell's private security team!"
I watched the screen without a single twitch in my jaw.
"He thinks he's playing a media game," I murmured.
"He's trying to manipulate public opinion to force a quiet settlement out of court," Arthur said. "He knows Caldwell Systems is preparing for a major public stock offering next month. He thinks you'll pay ten or twenty million dollars just to make the bad publicity go away."
I leaned back in my leather armchair, looking out the floor-to-ceiling window at the snow-covered garden where my daughters used to play with their mother, Claire.
"He doesn't know me very well, does he, Arthur?" I said softly.
"What do you want to do, Richard?"
"Call a national press conference for 2:00 p.m. today in the grand ballroom of the St. Regis Aspen," I commanded. "I want every news network, every financial reporter, and every local journalist in that room."
"Are you going to make a statement?" Arthur asked.
"I'm not just going to make a statement, Arthur," I said, my eyes cold as the Aspen frost outside. "I'm going to play the security footage from the hallway camera inside my house from two nights ago."
May you like
Arthur gasped. "Richard... that footage shows the children..."
"It shows the truth," I said, standing up. "Vanessa wanted to turn my family into a circus to save her reputation. I am going to show the world exactly what she did to four innocent five-year-old girls. Let's see if Harold Sterling can spin that."
