Chapter 7 - The Tarmac Confrontation

The wind howled across the snow-slicked runway of the Rifle Regional Airport, forty miles west of Aspen.
A sleek, matte-black Gulfstream G650 idling on the tarmac spewed white clouds of jet exhaust into the freezing night air.
Julian Montgomery, wearing a heavy leather coat and carrying a metallic briefcase, ran across the concrete toward the jet's mobile boarding stairs. Beside him walked two muscular private security guards wearing dark tactical gear.
Before Julian could reach the first step, two heavy black SUVs tore across the tarmac, their high beams blinding him, stopping in a tight defensive V-formation that blocked the jet's entrance.
The doors opened. Marcus and four armed Caldwell security guards stepped out, weapons held at low ready.
I stepped out from the lead SUV, wrapping my winter coat tight against the bitter wind.
"Julian!" I called out over the roar of the jet engines.
Julian spun around, his face twisting in panic. He clutched the metallic briefcase against his chest. "Caldwell! You can't stop me! I'm on private airfield property! I have diplomatic transit clearance!"
"You don't have diplomatic clearance, Julian," I said, walking steadily across the icy concrete until I was ten feet away from him. "And that briefcase doesn't belong to you."
"Stay back!" one of Croft’s security guards warned, reaching for his sidearm.
Before the guard could draw, Marcus moved with lightning speed, driving his tactical elbow into the guard's jaw, disarming him in a single fluid motion and forcing him face-first onto the frozen ground. The second guard immediately threw his hands into the air, surrendering.
Julian stumbled backward, slipping on a patch of black ice, falling hard onto his knees. The metallic briefcase clattered across the pavement, popping open upon impact.
Inside were six military-grade encrypted hard drives—the complete architectural blueprints for Caldwell Systems' satellite guidance network.
I walked over, picked up one of the hard drives, and looked down at Julian, who was shaking violently from cold and terror.
"Charles Croft promised you ten million dollars and a villa in South America, didn't he?" I said coldly. "He told you that once you brought him these drives, you'd be safe."
"Please, Richard!" Julian whimpered, blood dripping from his lip where he had hit the ice. "It was Vanessa’s idea! She was the one who made contact with Croft! She told me we could take your money and your technology and leave you with nothing!"
"And what about my daughters, Julian?" I asked, leaning down until my eyes were inches from his coward face. "Was it Vanessa’s idea to lock four five-year-old girls in an unheated room and feed them moldy bread while you ate steak in my ballroom?"
Julian wept, shielding his face with his bruised hands. "I... I was just following her lead! I didn't mean to hurt them!"
"You hurt my blood," I whispered. "And for that, there is no escape."
The loud wail of federal sirens cut through the night air.
Four black suburban vehicles with flashing red and blue lights tore through the airfield security gates, surrounding the runway. Federal Bureau of Investigation agents, led by Special Agent Thomas Blake of the Cyber-Crimes Division, poured out of the vehicles with weapons drawn.
"FBI! Don't move!" Agent Blake shouted over his bullhorn.
Agent Blake walked up to us, looking at the spilled hard drives on the tarmac, then at Julian.
"Julian Montgomery," Agent Blake announced, pulling out heavy steel handcuffs. "You are under arrest for corporate espionage, theft of classified defense technology, wire fraud, and conspiracy against the United States government."
As the federal agents dragged Julian toward their vehicle, Agent Blake turned to me, offering a respectful nod.
"Mr. Caldwell," Blake said. "We raided Charles Croft’s headquarters in Los Angeles twenty minutes ago. His board of directors has removed him, and he is currently in federal custody facing economic treason charges."
I looked at the jet idling on the runway, its lights blinking uselessly in the dark storm.

"Thank you, Agent Blake," I said. "Make sure Vanessa’s name is added to the espionage indictment."
"She’s already being transferred to a federal holding facility in Denver, sir," Blake assured me. "She won't see the outside of a prison cell for thirty years."
