Chapter 7 - The Weight of Silence

An hour later, Nathan was driving his car like a man possessed. He sped down the highway toward a small, historic town on the coast of Connecticut, where Claire was staying at her sister’s beach cottage for the remainder of the holidays.

The winter sun was dipping below the horizon, casting long purple and orange shadows across the snow-covered shoreline when Nathan pulled up outside the white clapboard house.

He got out of the car, his chest heaving, his heart pounding against his ribs like a sledgehammer.

He walked up the wooden porch steps and knocked on the door.

A moment later, Claire opened it. She wore an oversized wool sweater, holding a baby bottle in her hand. When she saw Nathan standing there—his eyes bloodshot, his face pale, looking completely shattered—her smile vanished.

"Nathan? What’s wrong?"

"Why didn't you tell me?" Nathan asked. His voice was broken, barely audible over the sound of the ocean waves crashing against the frozen shore nearby.

Claire froze. "What are you talking about?"

"Three years ago," Nathan choked out, a tear slipping down his cheek. "New York-Presbyterian. Ten weeks."

Claire’s eyes went wide. She stepped back as if hit by a physical blow, the color draining entirely from her face. She looked down at the floor, her breathing becoming shallow.

"You checked my medical records," she whispered, her tone dropping into a dangerous, dark calm. "You used your money and your power to dig into my private life."

"I needed to know who Julian was!" Nathan cried out, taking a step inside and shutting the door behind him. "I thought you were lying to me! I thought you had replaced me with him! But instead... oh God, Claire... you lost our baby. You lost our baby, and I was in Dubai buying marble for a hotel lobby!"

Claire set the baby bottle down on a side table with a loud thud. She turned to face him, her hands clenched into tight fists at her sides.

"Yes!" she shouted, her quiet grace finally shattering into incandescent rage. "I lost our baby! I sat in an emergency room bleeding, holding a nurse’s hand because my husband was on a zoom call with architects! When I called you from the recovery room, you told me you only had two minutes because the Sheik was walking into your meeting!"

"I didn't know!" Nathan sobbed, dropping to his knees right there on the entryway rug. He covered his face with his hands, weeping uncontrollably. "If you had told me, I would have burned that hotel to the ground and flown home!"

"Would you?!" Claire screamed, tears streaming down her face. "Would you have come home, Nathan? Or would you have resented me for pulling you away from your greatest deal?! You made it clear every single day that your empire came first. I was so terrified of being a burden to you that I bore the greatest grief of my life in absolute silence!"

Nathan looked up at her from the floor, his face soaked with tears, his heart bleeding out in front of her.

"I tried to tell you when you came back," Claire whispered, her voice cracking as she sank into a chair, wrapping her arms around herself. "You came home from Dubai, walked into our penthouse, dropped your bags, and spent three hours talking about stock options. I realized then... if I brought a child into our world, I would be raising it alone anyway. So I asked for a divorce."

Nathan crawled over to her chair, resting his hands on the armrests, looking up at her with pure, unadulterated remorse.

"I am so sorry, Claire," Nathan whimpered, his voice barely a whisper. "I am so, so sorry. I ruined us. I destroyed the most precious thing I ever had."

Claire looked down at the powerful, arrogant billionaire kneeling at her feet, broken into pieces. The anger in her chest slowly gave way to a deep, terrible sorrow.

"I know you are," Claire said softly. "But saying sorry doesn't bring back the past, Nathan. And it doesn't change who we are now."
